solar panel meter?

This may have been covered before but im not sure what the bits called so cant search - sorry :o

I got my solar panels installed at the weekend and they are now up and running.

I believe there is a piece of equipment I can attach which will show me how much power I am consuming compared to what I am producing so I know for example if I put the washing machine on or the heating, the solar energy will be enough to cover it.

Basically i'm on an economy 10 tarrif and I need to know if I can use the likes of the washing machine out with the 10 hour period without costing me more that the cheaper rates.

Does that make sense?

  • It may be called a geometer?

    Can anyone help?
  • Why waste money on a meter?

    Sunny = lots of leccy
    Cloudy = some leccy
    Dark = none

    Works for me...

    The out put can be very spikey unless i.e.when clouds pass by so if putting on a washing machine/dish washer etc that last for an hour and a half there may be times it does not produce enough power...

    So I just time stuff to run during peak sunshine hours when at work e.g. ASHP DHW and washing machine...

    Hi

    I have a PV system that uses a SunnyBoy inverter. This has the ability to link via Bluetooth to my PC. I run a piece of software from them called Sunny Explorer which enables me to monitor the output of the system on my PC continuously.

    They also produce a stand alone monitor called a Sunny Beam.

    I do not know if other inverter manufacturers produce a similar item.

    If you look at the Inverter this shows what the panels are producing at that moment in time. If you have a nice sunny day try to only have one big appliance on at a time. Anything that heats like a kettle, washing machine will be big users.

    Rob.
