Noise in the evening???

I never normally do any drilling in the evening as I don't want to upset the neighbours but last night I had to get a job finished which meant putting in a load of screws with a battery power drill. I was finished by 8pm but this evening my neighbour came out when I was moving my van and had a go at me and said he could report me for doing it. Is he right? what are the rules
Nothing to see here, move along.

What are the neighbours circs though? Does he have young kids or sick relatives, or work odd shift patterns? If he has any of these I would say he is right to complain about anti-social behaviour, even if it is a one-off. Even if not, in your shoes I would have nipped next door and asked if he minded in exceptional circs (could only have added 5 mins to the time to do the job)

Theres nothing they can do. 8pm is an OK time to finish any noisy work. If they work shifts, have children or are sick it makes no different. Everyone has to work on their house now and again and if she complained they would only do something about it if it was after 11pm and went on for more than one night.

Your neighbour has been spoilt, if this is the first time and he's moaning at 8pm, he doesnt know he's born, crikey, the neighbours I have had had been doing DIY every night and weekend for months.

Ask him what his problem is, it was only a one off for goodness sake, he would have a right to moan if it was every night:mad:
What would he rather have, you coming home drunk every night, shouting the odds, breaking down your front door, beating your wife and kids, parties every weekend, druggies in and out, car doors slamming, tell him he is lucky to have you as a neighbour.

    Honestly !!!! some people.

I would just ignore him - he clearly has no perspective. Frankly if it was actually a serious disturbance (i.e. very loud and very late) any rational person would politely complain at least a good few of time before getting heavy and making threats about reporting you. That's just ridiculous.

YOu can create noise until 11pm before your liable for trouble. Whilst you could have knocked and let them know you where intending to drill this would set up an expectation that everytime you want to be a bit noisy you need to ask first. I dont think 8 o clock was inconsiderate at all.

Your neighbour should be a bit more realistic and diplomatic.
If my neighbour spent an evening hammering and drilling then I'd say nothing. If it happened for a few nights in succession then next time I saw them I'd mention that it was noisey and ask how much more was left to be done.
If it went on for months on end then I'd gradually become more firm about it until I'd finally explain that I was going to complain.

Just coming out on the first night and threatening all sorts of things is stupid.

I don't think you were being at all inconsiderate but maybe, just maybe, your neighbour:

had had a horrendous day or
was in a foul mood or
    had a splitting headache or
had a row with his wife/girlfriend or
just found out his mum was ill or
just found out his wife/girlfriend had smashed up his car or
just realised that actually, yes, he does have a very small penis or
    all of the above

and your drilling was just the last straw?

Or maybe he's just a small penised, low patience threshhold plonker.

Like the others said it depends on his circumstances. But he cant legally touch you for this.

My next door neighbour is a painter / decorator and is currently doing the whole house up. But my boyfriend is also a painter / decorator and is doing our house up aswell. Lol. We stop all noisy stuff at 8 as they have a young child next door, but weve come to a bit of an understanding. If hes being noisy then we continue to be noisy later in the evening (as our noise wont be louder than his), but then he wont start work before 8am unless he can hear us moving around next door.

    It works well :)

As others have mentioned here, he can't do anything because you weren't doing it late into the evening or making a habit of it.

However, I've always made a practice of putting notes through neighbours letter boxes whenever I'm having any kind of work done in the house. I think if people are forewarned about noise & you apologise for it before it starts then they appreciate the touch of consideration. Drills especially can be very disturbing, even during daytime hours.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

i wish he lived nextdoor to me lol.........then he'd have the guts to complain about my other neighbour who's friend picks him up from work every morning and beeps his horn outside at 5.30 am to let him know he's there
