Watchman Oil Monitor

I have a Watchman oil monitor for my oil tank that has been pretty accurate so far. I only have a 1000 litre tank and it has been working really well until now.

I've searched online for a solution but can't seem to find one, so thought I'd ask on here .

Until Friday, it showed now much was left in the tank as a number, i.e. 6 for 60% (600 litres in my case), etc. On Friday it was showing 4 and then suddenly stopped and is now showing a symbol that looks like a backwards 'r'. I have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in to reset it but this has not worked. Does anyone know what this means? Does it mean the battery in the sensor in the tank needs replacing?

I need to monitor my oil quite closely as if it gets down to 1 or 2, that means I only have 100 or 200 litres left in my stupidly small tank (landlord's choice not mine). At the moment, things are still ticking over nicely with the boiler but I don't want to have a nasty surprise and wake up to find I have no oil one morning.

I know I can check how much is in the tank by asking DH to have a look but it's just so much easier to use the Watchman :D, especially as it's worked well so far.

Thanks for your help!

r” or “L”, means that the receiver is waiting for the signal from the transmitter.
    --
If the LED flashes along with “r”, the receiver has not received a signal from the transmitter on the tank since the last time it was switched on. If there was a power cut or another electrical appliance was used nearby (radio, hairdryer, blender), this could
cause such read-out. The receiver will display oil level after the next update of datafrom the transmitter. If such behaviour of the receiver persists, follow the steps below
    to reset the system:
    1. Unplug the receiver from the receptacle.
    2. Unscrew the battery from the transmitter in the tank.
    3. Plug the receiver to a 230V receptacle.
    4. Wait 2 minutes. Carefully screw the battery into the transmitter.
If the status remains unchanged, call service.

Best i can find for you.
I know it isn't "backwards" but i'd try the above steps.

I have the same problem so will try the solution offered, I have in the past changed the battery on the tank and this solved my problem previously. I have no idea how long the battery lasts but picked one up on Ebay.
  • Thanks for your reply. I'll get DH to have a look on Thursday when he's off work and let you know how I get on.
  • Quick update. The boiler engineer called this evening and said it's most likely the battery in the sensor that needs replacing and he'll change it on Thursday when he comes to have a look at some other issues we're having with our central heating.

    Thanks for the replies!
