Just been door stepped by someone working for NPower, and been fed a load of rubbish about them.

The one which made me laugh is that "By Law, British Gas have to charge more than anyone else".... :rotfl:

    An N-Power rep told me

'N Power supply everyone's gas and electricity - British Gas are just the people you pay the bill to, so it makes sense to cut out the middle man and pay your bill directly to your supplier'
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

Actually for gas he was quite correct.

Under the rules for deregulation of the Gas/electricty industry BG, who had a monopoly, were restricted from reducing their prices. The reasoning behind that stipulation was they could have reduced their prices as a 'loss leader' and killed off any competition before those companies got up and running.

In the same way Electricity companies, who were regional before deregulation, were not allowed to reduce prices for their catchment area.

The above is an over-simplification of a set of complex regulations, and the restrictions will be relaxed - but BG still have to apply to the Regulator for permission to cut prices.

I once had a nPower rep trying to convice me nPower was cheaper than Powergen - when I'd checked the switching sites only a week before and confirmed Powergen were still cheaper!

Had a knock from a Swalec rep a few days later, apparently they'd sacked him for misselling a couple of months ago and he walked straight into a job with nPower!

  • apprently acording to a BG rep, uSwitch has been paid 18 something million pounds for listing them as more expensive... *yawns, stops listening*

once she started, it went in one ear, out the other before i said i'd just changed and leaving it for a year to see, how stupid do these people think we are? :p

P.S. ok, no need to answer that, lol

She just got it the wrong way around - uSwitch wrote to BG and said that if BG paid uSwitch however many million pounds, they could substantially cut the number of people leaving BG through their site. BG made the details public and told uswitch to shove it.

The default option on uSwitch's site when searching would miss BG out in the results (although that changed this year), and you still can't switch to BG through them. The two companies detest each other.

This isn't the only time they have been in hot water for supposedly manioulating results, tbh I don't think much of their site anyway. Energyhelpline seems to be better as it includes ebico in the results and also you can search by cosumption instead of just by average bill.

Just shows how these 'Urban Myths' get started and perpetuated.

As Tripled stated, many of these 'independant' comparison websites will 'direct' customers toward the firm that pays them most commission.
