Networking question - which router?

This is the scenario: university network connection. On plugging in a device, I must register it to my account at the IT helpdesk. They record the MAC address and allocate each device it's own fixed IP address.

They will only allow one device to be plugged in per user at any one time. If you want any more, it is up to you/your department to supply a suitable device to expand the network. I require several devices plugged in and would also like to add wireless.

What I need is this: the router to act as a DHCP client and be allocated the IP address by the university system. The router then acts as a wall, between my own network and the university network. The router acts as a DHCP server, allocating IP addresses on my own mini network.

Is there any product that matches my needs? I have an old ADSL router, but this acts as a switch and therefore just expands the university network (it doesn't create my own network). I think it is a cable router that I require...

I hope I've made it clear and someone would be able to help me.

Surely your university would be the best place to start? They can tell you what equipment would work best with the existing hardware already installed?

a cheapie wireless access point should do it, from around £12 on ebuyer :) Uni ethernet connection into access point, and away you go....

Use PPPoE settings on the router and connect to the uni network it will issue your router with a ip from the uni's dhcp server, then you can use your routers built in dhcp server to issue you with lan ip or u can even set them manually

most of these uni networks supply via ethernet, so unless you have a cable router/posh router with incoming ethernet WAN connector it probably won't work, hence suggesting a WAP.....

My ADSL router (which I don't have with me at the moment) has a PPoE option. I will need to play around with this and see if that will work.

To quote them word for word from their email: "Although it is permitted in our regulations, we do not provide any support for the use of routers/switches/adapters on the university network."

TP-Link TL-R402M 1 WAN Port with 4 LAN Ports Cable/DSL Router should work but the wireless access point already mentioned would be easier to set up.

As I already have a wireless router which can act as a switch, I'm assuming any old wired cable router would do the job?
