I quite like substitutions - it's a little bit of a game for us.
We tend to buy most things at the bottom end of the price brand, so Discounter Range or Tesco Standard. Sometimes Value, but not usually.
We also tend to buy whatever works out the cheapest per 100g etc. This way, any substitutions we get are usually the 'next brand up' etc, so we're quids in!
Been a tad disappointed at Tesco's recently inability to not have my favourite items in stock - very few subs lately!

We once ordered a birthday cake as part of our shop - nothing extravagent just one of their pre-made cakes. It was substituted with a belgian bun!

I've ordered home delivery twice with Tesco and both times they've sent me veggies and salad barely fit for that evening. (I also requested a toothbrush with the note NOT GREEN - the jokers at Tesco thought they'd send me a green one (I'm not greenist, I didn't want it the same colour as my boyfriend's toothbrush ;))).

Sorry, just adding to your rant towards Tesco. :o
Definitely poor customer service again from Tesco. I've recently cut up my Tesco Clubcard but that's another story. ;)

p.s. Don't tell giraffe69 any of this because he (or she) says I talk utter drivel and I don't want to waste any more of his/her precious reading time. :)

:( What is it with Tesco lately? With my lunch I ate a small punnet of their 'mixed BERRIES' which were described as Strawberries, Blueberries and Blackberries.

 What I actualy munched through was a few handfulls of baby Grapes, 1 large oddshaped Blackberry and and I think somewhere in there were actually 1 or 2 blueberries plus 3 sqished Strawberries which were on the turn (so I disguarded these and had a Banana)! Since when have Grapes been classed as berries?

    Thanks :)

I wanted to make a lemon cake and ordered a bottle of lemon juice, but got lemon scented toilet cleaner instead. I didn't fancy making a cake with that.

What on earth goes through the pickers mind when he comes to pick a substitute for lemon juice and he picks toilet cleaner ?

Common sense wold be to give either a real lemon or another lemon juice if 1 available.

I dont work for tesco but a competitor and ive seen some weird subs going on although none by me.

I've asked for advice in the past for a suitable alternative eg a customer requested 3 packs of diced chicken but was out of stock so gave them some chicken breats which were on the same offer and the customer coulod then cut the breats up to they're hearts content.

    Its just common sense.

It was Jif lemon juice, so I think the picker might have got mixed up with Cif cleaning stuff and somehow I got own brand toilet cleaner.

The chicken thing reminded me of my last delivery from Waitrose. I forget the exact prices but it was something like 2 x 400g packs of diced chicken breast for £6. There was only one pack of the diced chicken left, so they sent that and 300g pack o whole chicken breasts. However, I was charged full price for both. Then the lady on the phone couldn't understand why I was miffed to be paying more money for less chicken! You would think if something was part of an offer, they'd either price match the offer or bring something else that is part of the special offer.

I picked up a pack of mixed berries in Tesco today and was surprised to see it was mainly grapes. It didn't look good value at all when we compared the price to the rest of the fruit, so we just got strawberries instead.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Imo the quality and value at tesco have both gone down hill a lot over the last few years. Last week, having spent the extra to get fresh fish from the counter, we're pretty !!!!ed off to find they hadn't bothered to gut the fish.

Tht is one of many small things that mean we have now abandoned tesco as our main shop. Will give one of the others a go for 6 months.
