Tesco produce

Think I might be looking int0 changing where I shop :(

Ordered a click and collect over the weekend, picked it up yesterday. There were 2 items unavailable, one (fish fingers) I requested be replaced with a suitable item, I got nothing. Second item (Barbecue seasoning) wasnt available, it was replaced with Piri piri chicken seasoning!

Poped into the store just after collecting it as we had run out of stuff didnt get a chance to order. As we were instore I manged to pick up a box of fish fingers and as for the seasoning there was a whole box of it right at the back of the shelf! Besides since when is Piri Piri anywhere near a substitution for Barbecue seasoning, a suitable substitution to me would be a different brand of barbecue seasoning surely ??

My third vent is the fact that 3 of the items I ordered (other than the above) had a shelf life lasting 1 day (so they were ending today), they were bread, meat and fruit. This is the second time this has happend in the past month how on earth can they say they they provide the longest freshest shelf life? The bread was half stale as it was, the meat looked far from fresh and the fruit was crushed and on the turn. These were not highlighted on collection so I had no choice if I wanted to keep them on my order or not.

I wont go back to getting it delivered at home as it makes no difference to the freshness.

:(

Sorry to rant and vent over thanks for reading :)

Piri Piri sauce is a type of seasoning, and it is used for BBQs. Hence, that would make it a BBQ seasoning. Did you mean a BBQ flavour seasoning?

Perhaps the items were not available at the time the picker was sorting your order?

You need to let the store know about the short shelf life of the items. They would have replaced them if you had returned them.
  • I let the store know about a short date on a pack of 6 yogurts that they had just delivered and they refunded the money without hesitation.

Just give them a ring - I find the customer service staff at Tesco really helpful.

Um as an ex chef I would disagree that piri piri is a barbecue seasoning. It is used in Portugal, South Africa and the Phillipines and is a really hot blend of spices for chicken piri piri. You may find it in Nando's but that's a chain originating in RSA not authentic.

To a trained chef piri piri is probably not a BBQ seasoning but for most people these days it is seen as such (thanks to nandos). Therefore there are many different piri piri BBQ products sold in the supermarket and they tend to be by the BBQ sauces so I can see why the op ended up with it!

This is where the problem is with substitutions. Some people only want the same brand items and don't like others - which may be a different price anyway - whereas others would prefer the same item but a different brand.

Like if I ordered beans, I'd be happy with any brand (actually, I prefer Branston to Heinz) as a substitute, but other people are Heinz-only and may think spaghetti hoops is a better substitute.

  • I've ordered home delivery twice with Tesco and both times they've sent me veggies and salad barely fit for that evening. (I also requested a toothbrush with the note NOT GREEN - the jokers at Tesco thought they'd send me a green one (I'm not greenist, I didn't want it the same colour as my boyfriend's toothbrush ;))).

Sorry, just adding to your rant towards Tesco. :o

Count yourself lucky that you didn't get black pudding instead of chocolate pudding as one unsuspecting customer did. Plus they got a scotch egg instead of bananas... how does that work??

Another customer got so sick of wacky substitutions that they stopped accepting them. Out of 30 or so items that they'd selected their next delivery had.... one. Brilliant.

I wanted to make a lemon cake and ordered a bottle of lemon juice, but got lemon scented toilet cleaner instead. I didn't fancy making a cake with that.

Whenever I place an online grocery shop order (whoever it is with), I always tick "no substitutes" for all items. I just think that if the item I want is not in stock, there are too many variations to what it could be substituted with, so therefore too much hassle. There have only been two or three occasions where the things I wanted were not available, so not really an issue anyway.
