Thanks. And thanks to the one person who actually helped me. Post #3, I think it was.

Anyway, now I understand that I am clearly a poor manager and do not deserve my job, I shall be handing in my resignation tomorrow so that somebody who doesn't need to ask questions such as these on an internet forum can have my job instead.

That's upto you OP but as a low level manager shouldn't you be asking HR to give you guidence if you think you are a poor manager?

I personally don't think you are I just think you have been given a job role and expected to get on with it without support.

I would like to know who interviewed this person in the first place and what his answer was to the question.

'If you receive a complaint or asked for assistance from a member of your staff what would you do?'

Or wasnt this question asked. Poor management costs a lot of money and I have seen this month after month. If you are not cut out for management you should stay in the background, listen and learn until you are ready for the fray!

What your saying is right but if I am correct the OP was a temp herself before given the perm job six weeks later, I remember her putting something like that on another thread I was following.

OP, everyone has to learn in new jobs. No one starts off perfect. I think asking is fine.

Agreed. People aren't born managers - it takes time and trial and error.

Maybe a forum isn't the best place to ask; but this time of night i imagine the OP couldn't contact HR or anyone else to ask.
I'm pretty sure you know the answer anyway and possibly just after validation or support.

I don't understand why people would post just to run someone down and imply they can't do their job.

OP - personally I would not engage with sms exchange, especally on your private mobile with this or any other employee. And especially late in the evening, this can be used as... a lot of things. No good to do at all.

Giving out your private number was a mistake, learn from this for the future.

I am sure your company has a procedure that should be followed here - not sure if the temp in aware of this procedure. That is again something that should be set in stone on day one of her/his work.

Cover yourslef, speak to het first thing in the morning, follow with an email confirming what was said.

And in a lot of cases they are on half of that salary.
