pay as you go vs. pay monthly

I've come to the end of my 12 month period with 02 so called them up, i pay £30 a month for 200 minutes and 100 texts, the girl on the phone said the best she could do was reduce it to £25 a month but then i'd be tied into a 18 month contract so i asked to switch to pay as you go, as i mostly just text people anyway any my aim would be to top up £10 a month and no more than that....

Is there any way i could call O2 or go into a store and request a cheaper package than 200 minutes and 100 texts (of which i don't use much as it was a 12 mnoths free line rental cashback deal) so it'd be say £15 a month on contract or something?

Thanks for any advice...

There is a pretty long thread about O2 Retentions, and it's just come up adjacent to this one. Start at the recent end and work backwards a bit, and compare recent offers people have had

The Retentions team is not the same as upgrades, so when you call them (free on 100) you need to choose menu options as if you are thinking of leaving.

Offers seem to be either 20% off line rental of online deals, or £15 a month on shop ones, depending who you talk to, so you'll probably call a couple of times. And you can get a further £100 off if you forego a new phone

If you don't get far, then there are payg offers with plenty of texts, but I'm not an expert on those; I'd start from T-mobile's payg Text Appeal option at 3 pence each, and then see if anything better is possible
