No Roaming for 2 months with Three

My better half just started a sim-only contract with three and when trying to activate roaming was told that they don't allow roaming for the first two months for sim only customers.

This is a bit of a pain when she's abroad every week for work...

What are her options!? It's probably somewhere in the small print, sure, but this is now not at all useful for her as she'll have been abroad about 12 times before it works...

I don't even understand why they have this odd policy?!

At a guess, I would say that it has got nothing to do with being sim only, and more to do with being a new customer to 3. Of course, I could be completely wrong though.

It is in the terms and conditions but just ask to speak to the customer concerns team and they can do it anyway.
  • I got roaming activated on my 3 SIM only contract a fortnight after taking it out. There wasn't any problems in doing this - the customer service agent said that they just needed to carry out a credit check, which they did while I was on the phone and I got a text saying that it had been activated straight away.

Best thing to do is to ring them up and ask.

I just got back from a trip abroad and experienced the same issue. I've had my telephone number for 10 years and a couple of weeks ago transferred to a new Three contract.

Unfortunately I didn't realise this was the case until I was abroad, and even after speaking to multiple customer service representatives they wouldn't budge and refused to enable roaming. This left me without a phone - very annoying.

Can understand them not wanting new customers to rack up large bills but they should at a minimum allow you to recieve incoming calls/ messages and make emergency calls.

Sounds as if 3 have been stung with fraudsters talking out contacts, taking them out of the UK and running up huge bills before they're found out.
  • Can I just bump this and ask if anyone has any recent experience of getting roaming activated sooner than 2 months in to their contract?

A friend is about to take out a Three SIM-only contract, but is going abroad in a month or so and needs roaming activated.

One thought was if they buy the SIM-only deal online, then there's the 7 day cooling off period under the Distance Selling Regulations - perhaps they can call up Three customer services and try and get roaming activated, and if they fail then they could just ditch the whole contract - or would that not work for some reason?

They have a pretty good credit rating so an extra credit check (for the roaming) shouldn't be a problem.

    Thanks for any help.

Someone I know took out a three contract and despite being a friend of the store manager, there was no movement on the 'no roaming for new clients' situation

    :(
