Big Brands vs Own Brands
Comments

Just reading all this makes me realise that some brands have crept into my trolley for no good reason I know. Toothpaste for one, can't think why we buy Colgate when I was brought up on Boots own brand. DH uses special sensitive paste and mouthwash so we stock up when its on offer, there is a big row of bottles of mouthwash in our bathroom.
I have often bought value fruit and veg and have a funny story about value carrots, overheard in a supermarket, husband to wife, "why have you bought value carrots?" Wife, "its OK they are only for the horse" !
I always buy value tinned tomatoes, once they are in the bolognaise who can tell?
I do agree with many others that branded coffee is usualy better, I drink decaff instant and I tried lots of brands and ranges but only one brand came up decent enough to drink.
We have branded cereals I have never seen own brand shredded wheat, own brand wheatabix are OK but cornflakes are a no no they must be Kellogs in this house.
Now off to see if I can make any brand to value swaps on my regular shop."doing the best you enjoy, not the best you can tolerate, is truly the best you can do sustainably."0 -
Lidl's bananas are fairtrade, too!
We only ever buy local (ie IoW) eggs, as they're free-range and don't exactly travel a long way. I don't know how they compare in price, as we buy them because of where they come from. We have been buying local meat, too - good stuff and it supports local farmers. Sadly, though, our nearest supplier is closing tomorrow, and the local butcher doesn't sell IOW meat, strangely enough.
OH bought a large bag of 'horse' carrots yesterday, for the equines. The quality is mostly ok, but they wouldn't pass grading for human consumption.
That comparison website is interesting, but no good for here. We don't have an Asda, ocado don't deliver here, and Morrisons isn't on there. Very odd!0 -
This thread is well worth a browse... What Value things have you tried and liked?
Must admit I thought that there would be some things I thought I'd never "step down" on - like Heinz baked beans for example. Every alternative I tried was 'orrible. Until the day I tried Arsda's smart price ones. They seem to be only slightly different, very edible, and the adjustment wasn't at all hard to make. Of course personal tastes vary - but anyway, that one was a win for me
Same here Squeaky. Love them.
Though Asda cheap mixed spice was far too heavy on cloves for my liking.Put the kettle on.0 -
oh my life thanks so much for recommending mysupermarket.com!!! Just popped in my sainsburys online order managed to get £75.12 and have got pretty much everything from the basics range (give or take a few things) - dh has said i can buy pretty much whatever i like but he wont give up his branded cola! ive got enough items to keep our cupboards/fridge/freezer stocked for at least the rest of the month (going to have to start using up stuff thats already in it before i place my order to make room!)
Good amount of fruit and veg included in all this too! the same at all the others would be £15-£35 more
So thank you all of you for your help and advice. off to book my delivery slot0 -

AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH CLOVES !!!!!!
Spit, yuk, barf, urgh!!!
As for people who put cloves in apple pies or rice pudding... they should be taken out and shot! I had an apple pie once with ten cloves in it and that was ALL I could taste. Sheesh. One clove shared between 1,000,000,000,000,000 pies would still have been too much.
Harumph!

LondonDreamer, If you can't bear to part with your branded toothpaste, pop into your local poundland, they normally have the big brands in and it will save you some money0

Thanks, but they don't ever have the one I like. As I said, I'm fussy - there's two I'll alternate between but all the others I've tried (branded or not) taste rank to me. I only ever buy it on half price so it works out under a quid anyway.0 -
woohoo!! ordered and set for delivery on 15/3/12!! gives us plenty time to eat what we have in to make room!0
