Thinking about getting a credit card, but which is the best?

Getting married soon so i'm thinking about applying for a credit card but which is the best to go for,i've never had one in my life and its only going to be used if i really needed it to help pay for things.

Assuming the things you might need to pay for can be bought on a credit card the best card would be a 0% purchase card, with the longest promo period you are able to get.

However if you've never had a card before you might struggle to get a 0% card. What other credito products have you had in the past, that still show on your credit file?

I've got a Barclaycard that gives me 1% cash back, directly off the bill, every month.
I spend £1000, they bill me £990, and I do push £1000 a month through it at least.

If its for wedding stuff, then you might want a 0% on purchases card, so you can buy things for the wedding, and pay for them interest free over the next year. No idea on those deal I'm afraid.

if you have never had a credit card in your life. I think your chances of getting one might be very limited. Have you managed any credit before.
    I owe £3233 @ 0%

In the past i've had two loans, one which was paid every month with no delays and the other was paid off in full half way through the three year loan deal. I've just applied for the M&S 0% on purchases card for 15 months, then a rate of 15.9% APR. I should find out within 48 hours if i'm successful or not.
  • As suspected i was knocked back, aint sure why yet but there sending a letter out to tell me why. Is this me now knocked back from every credit card company as i might try for the Tesco CC or am i better off just going to my bank?

BTW why is it that people with no debt and always good with money get refused

You need to order your credit reports to see what the lenders are seeing when they search you before making and wasting more applications.

Because they can't demonstrate a 'management of credit', and are therefore largely an unknown quantity.

In other words you need to walk before you run. This usually means asking your bank first (the one that receives your income and pays your bills) and if they say no then a credit builder card provider such as Capital One, Barclays Initial, Vanquis, etc.
  • Depends how you are going to use it. For me the best credit one is the one that gives me low interest emergency credit when I need it (0% cards are not good for me because of limited time you can use them at low rate). My personal favourite is Barclaycard Simplicity currently 7.9% APR (mine is 6.8% as I've had it for 4-5 years and the rate back then was 6.8%). Sainsburys offers 6.9% APR card at the moment. Capital One offers 9.9% APR card which is not that good, but still at reasonable level.

Eventually if you want a card for shopping and repay everything in full every month then probably the best would be cashback cards imho.

Oh I just read this post. Sorry to hear. I would suggest to apply for some easier to get card then.

Try Barclaycard Initial (or Capital One Classic) and build your credit history with those. My first CC was Barclaycard Initial (but that was in 2005 and I got £1850 limit at that time).

I wouldn't suggest Vanquis or Aqua as those the worst of the bad cards you can get, mainly for people with BAD credit history.

Don't try for Tesco CC because it's not one of the easy cards to get and I'm sure you don't want your application to be declined again.
  • Would me going to my bank,Santander be easier to get one,i have my business account with them?
  • Do you really need a credit card though? I know you want to use it to get a good rating, but it can feel like free money and spending on it can become addictive and easy - only when you get the statement do you realise the full extent of what you owe.
To get a credit history you could try getting a vodafone contract which shows on your credit file and a a credit builder card such as Vanquis, but set up a direct debit to pay it. Strangely, it is best not to pay it off in full every month as this does no good to your credit rating, afterall the banks want to make money from you - try paying off all but a pound (worked for me)
