Vent at council charging for stolen wheelie bin

  • Doesn't the wheelie bin remain the property of the council? (They certainly do in Leeds). In this case, shouldn't they be replaced at the council's expense? After all, you are just paying £20 to "lease" a new one otherwise.

That's what I tried to say to the lady, the bin never belongs to us, they request we leave it outside our property but it's our fault if it goes missing :( In the good old days we had the round bins with a bin bag in, the bin man used to come in and carry it over his shoulder and into the wagon.

we only get an allowance of 1 free black bin bag and 1 free green recycle bag a week here. You can leave any black bag out each week but the recycleing has to be in a green or clear bag...... our council cant afford wheelie bins but we are in a rural area.........

I live in a rural area too, and have had wheelie bins for about the last 12 years! So much more convenient in my view than using bags, even more so when there is a lot of wildlife around to potentially scavenge through your rubbish

Round our way, the greedy council charge according to what council tax band you are in. If you are in the highest band, its over £100.

Needless to say, bin theft is rife. Most people put their bins out, then get them round the back of the house as soon as they are emptied.

Mine belongs to the council, they printed it on there.

Empty bins are also used by thieves to move their swag.

I'm smack bang in the middle of a shopping area, and it gets silly with bins. Residential bins are collected once a week (recycling/waste alternative) but then you get bins out on other days for shop waste, shop recycling, shop glass, shop rags etc) It does sometimes feel that every day there is a bin out.

My issue is the sods in the shop that backs on to the courtyard (aka concrete space that was too small to build on :D) use our recycling bins and fills them up. We're already one down between three households, and you haven't got a hope in using them. I need a blooming lock on them! (One of the recycling bins was rejected last round, so it's not been emptied in a month. Cue 3 households and a shop using one bin for this fortnight.) None of us want to pay the council for another one, and they're not "named" so no one is claiming they have the missing one.

I am getting rather peeved regarding recycling now though. I wouldn't even mind if they got off their backside and put them out for us when I forget. They're a bakery, they're up in time in the morning!

We ended up with 2 bins at one point. The spare didn't have a number, so we kept putting it out for weeks until it was claimed/went on holiday somewhere else.

I ended up with 2 bottle bins for a couple of months. I thought somebody would notice theirs was missing but I eventually had to ask the council to take it away!

The lid off my newspaper recycling box disappeared during the cold snowy spell (spot the resemblance with a snowboard?). Now they won't collect the newspapers because there's no lid on the box - so now all the newspapers go in the bin....

i burn the address on mine with a soldering iron underneath :)

I see a flaw in this. If your bin gets stolen you will have to go round the district upending everyone else's bin to find your one.
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.
