After visiting the Halifax branch yesterday they have provided further assurance that the £800 penalty they deducted for closing a 2 year FT bond 3 days after opening it (due to discepency in the rate) will be credited back to my wife's account within 14 days. The lesson here for us is never to respond to any offer which arrives in the post before the existing bond or ISA has expired. Wait till it has matured and then look at the options. It's best do do so on-line as well because you will get the rate quoted and it's usually a better rate. In the time it takes to action by post, the rate can have dropped significantly (you can be certain it will never go up!)0

I was caught up in this and have ended up with 3.5% instead of 3.7%. I phoned Halifax and they admitted they had made a mistake. Promised to increase it to 3.7% backdated and give me compensation. The compensation arrived but it's still 3.5%. Now they deny the mistake. I'm not going to pursue it - the compensation and monthly £5 into my reward accounts far exceed the 0.2% interest and I don't want them to delve too deepy into the reward accounts...
