    ok... heating system
A thermostat is a component of a control system which senses the temperature of a system so that the system's temperature is maintained near a desired setpoint. The thermostat does this by switching heating fuel which is gas on and off, and regulating the flow of a heat transfer fluid by a pump as needed, to maintain the correct temperature. The name is derived from the Greek words thermos "hot" and statos "a standing"
and also the word n.o.b also come the person ariba off the mse forum
Such a shame that you had to finish an almost reasoned argument with an insult.

Back on topic, some may be able to shut the heating down completely for some hours, others like me can't / don't. The radiators in my house are simply not 'man' enough. This will be fixed soon though I hope.

when the heating is on it doesn't mean the gas is on ..
.the pump could could just be on ...so if the room is at the required temp ..then the pump just works, no gas ...yawn

Doesn't your thermostat switch off the pump? i.e. when the room is up to temperature the room thermostat switches off the pump.

    does your boiler "modulate"?

Unless the ambient temperatures on every day of the billing period matched those of the previous year, your basis of comparison is entirely flawed.
Are all the other factors constant? Have you maybe improved the insulation in your house in the last year?

The boiler output automatically reduces to match the heating load. Can make a difference to efficiency.

    true
however i remember a real difference this winter, maybe it was a little milder but not mild bit it was still winter weather.

the warmth was like an hotel, maybe thats why library's, schools and public places leave there heating on..there the ones who are always trying to save money

ambient temperatures on every day of the billing period
the question would be.. how much, 1 or 2 degrees would effect the houses temperature- as its heavy insulated..meaning stopping the cold coming in, as well as stopping the heat going out..
    who knows?

The winter temperatures were dramatically different. Daily figures taken from a min/max thermometer in my garden (in the Midlands) show:

Stands to reason that you would use less gas in the winter of 2011/2012 to maintain the same level of temperature, or the same gas would maintain higher temperatures in your case.
