MKRR Chasing Nationwide Debt which I paid but don't have proof!

Options
Looking for a bit of advice so any comments would be appreciated.

Back in 2008 I went into an unauthorised overdraft on my account with Nationwide which went on for a long time amounting in bank charges of just over £400.

In August 2008 I paid off the debt with cash over the counter. I was issued with a receipt which I kept until about a year ago when I was having a clear I stupidly chucked away thinking everything was paid up and it had been 3 years since so there should be no problems.

Anyway over the last 7 months Nationwide have passed my account to 3 different dca ... the first 2 I asked for proof of debt and neither were able to provide. The 3rd being MKRR have come back to me this weekend with statements showing that in Aug 2008 the amount was £420.60. I dont dispute the amount as obviously I paid it however now cannot prove it which is so frustrating.

The questions I have are about what I can do next, do I have any options?

One thing I want to ask MKRR for is a more recent statement or proof they closed my account as it seems strange that Nationwide stopped applying charges around the time I paid the debt, if it wasn't paid why stop applying debt?
Secondly, surely they should send me a more recent copy of my account or proof of closure as sending me a statement from 4 years ago could mean anything. Since then I could have paid, not paid, had account closed etc?

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I cannot help with the debt people advice but something similar happened to me.
    your money owed jumped off the screen at me so hope this helps and makes sense:

    The £420.60 is;

    £400 balance
    £0.60 interest
    £20 further charge for going back into U/OD with that 60p!

    I feel for your situation. I paid off £380 in charges for an unpaid payment of £2.68 around the same dates that you mention. The charges spiralled but Ifinally was able to phone up and pay them off by debit card or so i thought.
    The following month I received a bill for £20.4--- < this was because in the 3 days it took for the debit card payment to process, 40-odd pence of interest was added to the account, triggering a new £20 charge.

    Sorry I couldnt help further, but it seems to me that they are completely wrong, in the sense that you probably "only" owe £20.60. Seems a strangely similar amount to my story above.
