    On the other hand......

    We moved into a property that had lightshades. They were seriously dirty and dusty. Some were of the type that you could not wash.

    We took the lot down and put up paper cheapos in their place. This isn't my home, it's a stop gap. I'm not spending money on a decent lightshade when a 99p paper job will suffice in the meantime.

    I agree with this. Long ago I nicknamed them 'landlord shades' as i only saw them in rented rooms! I certainly think you should provide shades. I let a room to a lodger and would always provide a reasonable quality shade.
