Should I buy lamp shades for a property to let

I have just replaced all the ceiling fittings, mostly ornate brass ones, with standard 6" pendant fittings.

Should I get shades before I try a let a property out, or should I just leave them as they are.

The walls have all been painted, magnolia (yes, a bit boring but it's my first attempt at renting out a house)

If it has any relevance, it is a 3 bedroom 'family' house, rather than a student / single person type property.

I thank you for any advice provided.

Lamp shades are cheap, you will look cheap if you don't put them in.

I would just put the most basic shades you can find it. To be honest though in many areas properties to rent are snapped up quickly even when they're not in amazing shape so it shouldn't put many people off.
  • I agree with Jamie 11, I used to live in rented flats and a property without lampshades would have put me off you don't have to spend a fortune it just finishes a room off

Yes, though what type depends on your target market.

If a designer flat in central London aimed at city bankers.... you need designer lampshades.

If not, some cheap B&Q shades. Tenants can always replace with their own if they want (and replace yours when they leave) but you should provide something.

If you live near a branch of 'The Range', I found them to be the cheapest for basic plain lampshades, much cheaper than any of the chain DIY places.

I'd not rent a place without lampshades.... apart from the hassle of buying some, I'd have no ladder to put them up.

None put in when LL refurbed this house. Didn't put us off at all. We were actually more bothered that the bulbs were incandescants rather than energy saving. We had lampshades from our house, and bought a couple more very cheap ikea ones. I put them up by standing on a chair, no ladder needed, although we do have one. We've taken the incandescent bulbs out, kept them aside and put energy saving ones in though.

Please, please, please dont get the really cheap paper shade balls. Appologies to anyone who has them but hanging tracing paper aound a light isnt benefitting anyone, it just makes you feel sad that you have an ugly shade!
