Free Energy

Me again, off work with a bad back and little else to do but surf the net and pop painkillers !

Anyway, within the next couple of months the biggest scam ever or the most momentus energy news in history will be made public.

In simple terms an Irish company reckon they have a device which produces more energy than it uses, thereby breaking the current known laws of physics.

If its a joke then they've carried it off well so far and for what reason I don't know.

If its real then it will truly be life changing for all of us.

Latest news is they have named the device 'ORBO'.

Steorn can be found here.

Should be interesting whatever the results.

Does anyone remember "Ginger" and how it would revolutionise personal transport?

The 'Ginger' Segway is a good device, just overpriced by about 400%.
  • There have been such claims before now, and they have turned out to be caused by miscalculations or have simply "disappeared" without a trace.

What I can't understand is the continued use of the term "free energy". A more correct term is "Zero point energy", which relates to the latent energy that exists in universal space.

A better explanation of the known science relating to such claims would add some credence to the invention/discovery.

If by some marvel of physics these folks have somehow tapped into this infinite (well, at least as far as us mere beings are concerned) resource then things could be rosy for Steorn.

Still, I'll remain suitably sceptical until I see it for myself!

I think the patent office still receive many applications for perpetual motion machines and other such 2nd law of thermodynamics infringing devices. I remember all the rage years ago of the cold fusion experiments that in the end were never duplicated. I think this will just end up the same way. Even zero point energy isn't really a scientific theory, more just a speculative hypothesis, like tachyons. Not really scientific but great for sci fi. Also of interesting note according to wikipedia that the planned announcement of the end of Q1, which assuming means financial year, is 1st April. :)

There was once an invention that allowed a motor engine to run off sea water, going back a few years, its creation was abruptly bought up by the oil companies and dissappeared. Cold fusion was also apparantly bought up by the fuel industry and likewise, dissappeared. It was breifly mentioned in a science magazine, but I cant remember which one (either OMNI or What Scientist) wether or not this is true, it most certainly is plausable.

Ahh yes the old oil company conspiracy. The cold fusion thing I remember other labs around the world repeated the exact experiments to the letter and didn't get the same results. It was public domain available research and not a secret invention that could be "bought up" and suppressed and hence many people tried to replicate it. Even the same scientists themselves couldn't end up replicating their own results. It just doesn't gel with me, that an oil company would want to suppress it when they're putting so much research money into renewable energy/fuel technology and it would be to their own long term advantage to exploit the technology.

Do you actually believe all that?

Diana died in a car crash caused by a drunk driver driving too fast. Elvis is not alive. Men did really walk on the moon. Cold fusion is not yet and probably never will be possible and you can’t run a car on sea water using any currently known technology.

    IMO of course. :)

No need to be quite so coy about predicting the date of the announcement ...

Did the population of 1500 bc, beleive that flying was only done by witches, and death would befall anyone who travelled beyond 20mph due to lack of air, did they believe the earth was flat, and to traverse the oceans would mean you would fall off the edge. Did they beleive that man could one day teleport from far distances, into a small box in your living room. As for space travel, did they beleive in such outragious things as infinate universes. let alone the concept of the moon being anything more than cheese. Did mankind just 100 years ago, beleive it possible for us all to be on MSE right now, listening to our huge music collection on our little Ipods. I ask merely because, wether or not I beleive in cold fusion, or sea water running engines, I dont dispute the concept of its creation, they say every invention started off as an idea.
