Realised it was near the mark Rob so have been transferring all her pictures and videos over to an External HD.

Copied her Itunes over too but wont delete that as unsure how it effects it.

Fingers crossed that will release some / enough space.

To turn System Protection on or off for a particular disk
Open System by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
In the left pane, click System Protection. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
To turn on System Protection for a hard disk, select the check box next to the disk, and then click OK.

To turn off System Protection for a hard disk, clear the check box next to the disk, and then click OK.

Am i turning it on or off?

Remove internet clutter - click on Internet Options in the Control Panel, and delete browsing history.
Option does not exist - Google chrome - did it via GC tools
Internet explorer would not open?

Remove temp files - - go to accessories in Programs, then click on "Run" - type %temp% in the run box (including percent signs), then OK - list of temp files is shown -delete as many as you can (those in use wont delete, but the rest can go without issues.

Now try disk cleanup again in computer, c: properties, then clean disk - delete all entries,

From Admin tools - Disc clean up - i get a pop up saying it has stopped working?

How full is yr disk now? 21.1 free of 143GB after deleting her Pics, Vids docs etc - all saved on protabe HD.

Now i have removed some stuff and freed up the C drive a bit things are happening faster. Some processes have started to work again now too.

Admin tools / disc clean up is now working and i have deleted all sorts of temp files etc (2GB)

Not sure about these and would welcome some advice. Ok to delete or not?

Delete it all (in Red).........when its done run a defrag - under C drive properties tools.

Will take a long time as its probabaly not been done before, and yr hard drive will be in bad shape in terms of file fragments. Probably best to let it run overnight; when its done, do it again, as I've often found that it needs two attempts to get some order.

It will then probably boot a lot quicker, but you may wish to take a look at yr startup services/programs to see what you don't actually need when the laptop starts - you do this via MSCONFIG - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSConfig - always tick the "hide MS services" box - you start by using the Run program from Programs/Accessories. Folks such as Closed would recommend remove as many of the start-up and non-MS services, if not all (except the AV ones). You cannot do any harm by doing this, as you can run it gain and switch those you want back on - ie what you do is totally reversible.

Just loaded and ran Ccleaner which released some more space.

Will delete as advised.

The defrag has been programmed to self run and has been done regularly. Will undertake it manually anyway.

from yr hijackthis log, I would do a couple of things:

1) uninstall all programs that are not essential, eg all the browser tool bars, google toolbar etc
2) Use MSCONFIG to disable startup services/programs - looks like to have everything bar the kitchen sink starting when you boot it. You get to it, via accessories, RUN, typing in msconfig and OK. Place a tick in hide MS services. I would start by removing all ticks apart from those relating to AV. I would do the same with startup. Reboot, a) it will be much faster, and b), I don't expect that you'll miss anything. You have many Lenovo services/programs running which are really unnecessary.

It may also be a good idea, if using IE, to reset it; tools, internet options, advanced tab, click on reset. Reopen IE, then tools, internet options, programs tab, click on Manage Add-ons: re-enable just your AV add-ons.

Extra RAM can help especially if you're running Vista on 1gb RAM, but your main problem has been a full hdd, don't you need a larger hdd?

a slightly quicker & easier way of disabling startup progs is use CCleaner, Tools (left-hand side), Startup, then disable everything in the list except your antivirus.....reboot and re-run hjt and post a new log If anything causes a problem by being off, just go back into CCleaner and re-enable it and reboot..
