    Not restored to factory settings. ........"do a system restore to a few days ago,"

    tried uninstalling BT netprotect - I get a pop up saying "Mcafee UI host has stopped working" and not a lot else happens

    Everything is taking forever... lol
    I save so I can spend.

    Try running stages 2 + 3 in safe mode = (click F8 during the boot and select safemode with networking....)

    Three options:
    Upgrade to Windows 7
    Upgrade to Windows XP
    Scrap the whole thing.
    All 3 equally viable options when it comes to escaping Vista.

    Step 2.. Will not download even in safe mode as instructed??

    Install Malwarebytes first. I would also suggest a serious clean out of your installed programs - there's often all sorts gets in, especially where the inexperienced and/or kids are involved.

    To turn System Protection on or off for a particular disk
    1. Open System by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_47.png, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
    2. In the left pane, click System Protection. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_41.png If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    3. To turn on System Protection for a hard disk, select the check box next to the disk, and then click OK.
      – or –
      To turn off System Protection for a hard disk, clear the check box next to the disk, and then click OK.
    Remove internet clutter - click on Internet Options in the Control Panel, and delete browsing history.

    Remove temp files - - go to accessories in Programs, then click on "Run" - type %temp% in the run box (including percent signs), then OK - list of temp files is shown -delete as many as you can (those in use wont delete, but the rest can go without issues.

    Empty recycle bin

    Now try disk cleanup again in computer, c: properties, then clean disk - delete all entries,

    How full is yr disk now?

    Brought it into work today... no internet connection but malwarebytes was already loaded so will try that and the clean up.

    From the info above, for whatever reason your system has less than 1% free space. Your challenge is to get this to a minimum of 15% - if its all stuff you need then perhaps you need more storage? You mention 143gb - this would imply a 160gb hdd with a perhaps a recovery partition? 160gb is small by modern day standards, even 4 years ago when you may have bought it. Could you just check in "computer" that there isn't another unused hdd partition? The worst case if you can't recover sufficient space, is that you either need an external hdd to offload the stuff not needed online, or buy a larger hdd, and clone the existing drive to it.
