Easyjet flight: theft from luggage

Flew to Barcelona on Wednesday 22 Feb 2012, Easyjet advised all passengers at the end of the boarding line that their bags may not fit in the cabin so we could check them in at no cost. In our suitcase was £450.00, in Euros. It was padlocked and in a white envelope hidden amongst the clothes. We were told to put the bag by the steps to the plane, where we watched it until a handler carried it away, and we boarded the plane. When we got to Barcelona, the suitcase had been opened and the money had been stolen. Reported the theft to Menzies at Barca.
This must happen EVERY day when hand luggage is put in the aircraft hold. These handlers KNOW that there are valuables in these bags as they were intended for the cabin. We expect a lengthy battle to get this money back, so does anyone on here know the best course of action to take.
We have gone direct to Easyjet, and reported the theft to Menzies Aviation and may claim on insurance, and expect it to take ages - but this is actual THEFT, by staff at Menzies Aviation/Easyjet, not 'loss'. Cannot believe the people who do this every day and get away with it. After all the security one goes through to get the bag onto the plane just for some bloke to open it and pilfer and do what they like. Surely the airlines have to take steps to protect luggage being opened etc?
Cannot imagine this happening in the US. So why here, in a massive airport like Luton?

Why was your cabin/hand luggage padlocked?......apart from that,a much better alternative to a padlock is a strong cable tie that has to be cut off at your destination and is easily spotted when retreiving your luggage if it has been tampered with.Political?....I dont do Political....well,not much!0

I would think it common sense not to put valuables into the hold rather than needing to be told.
As well as getting the phone barred, make sure you get the IME on the phone blocked so it then becomes a lump of plastic that is useless to anyone
Contact your travel insurance and see if they will cover anything0 -

Several years ago I padlocked a case on a return trip from Spain. When my case reappeared on the carousel back in London, I found that someone had tried to force the padlock and, when that failed, had slashed the case round one corner with a knife. I lost nothing as the case only held dirty clothes but decided that the thieves had slashed it simply because of the padlock. i went straight to the baggage office and they handed me a new case on the spot. They must have been used to this happening. I would never put anything valuable in a case in the hold.0 -
