Ebay case - anybody have advice on this one ?

Hello

A buyer has opened an ebay 'item not as described' case because I stated recorded delivery in the auction but did not send it by recorded delivery

Does anybody know how paypal resolve these ?

  • I'm guessing they'll ask you to partially refund the postage..?

  • AFAIAA paypal dont work like that

they either rule in favour of the buyer or seller so the buyer either gets a full refund or nothing

As the item itself was as described hes actually had to lie to open the case because he had to state the item was not as described (in an ebay message he even said this)

i didnt think SNAD cases applied to the postage options but Im just wondering if I can lose if I get the wrong paypal numpty looking at my case
  • why didn't you send it recorded delivery if that's what you charged for?

I didnt charge for recorded delivery in the postage amount & the item sold for 1 pence so refunding him would have meant spending money to sell the item (would have been cheaper to chuck it in the bin)

but thats not really relevant to my question - I'd like advise on the paypal side of things

I didnt charge for recorded delivery but thats not what I want advise about

I'd like advise on the paypal side of things

you will get the advice given!
most likely paypal will rule in your favour unless you mean he has actually stated the item isnt as described
however think yourself lucky you didnt get an intem not received claim
why would you state RD and then not snd via that method?
    self inflicted this one
  • I'd like to understand the buyer's mentality here. If he (in this case used regardless of gender) received the item safely and paid virtually nothing for it, what on earth is he complaining about? And is he willing to return it if PayPal's ruling states that he must?

  • yes i agree its self inflicted - its a long time (years) since Ive sold any significant number if items on ebay so Im going through a learning curve

the idea was to state recorded even when not intending to use (& not charged for) to deter people who might be inclined to claim non delivery but its backfired

I'm most interested in hearing from anybody who has had the same type of claim - for example should i cut & paste the meesage he sent me stating the item WAS as described into the paypal response box
  • yes, if it were me I would paste his message to me in to the dispute box.

And in future always send by the method you state in the auction. :p
Even if it means taking a hit on the postage costs if you didn't calculate it correctly. As paypal will refund the whole payment including postage costs if they find in favour of the buyer, so you'll be out of pocket anyway.

  • Ebay has become a fraudulent-buyer's heaven. It used to quite fair and honest years ago but now, it these days of wanting something for nothing and scammers, it is too easy for idiots to claim all sorts of stupid reasons why they shouldn't have to pay.

Clearly the buyer is just a !!!!!!!!!!. He paid a penny for the item and is trying it on. Here's the answer, get him to return the item to you at his cost and refund his penny!

I would cut & paste the message into the dispute & also say that you are happy to refund the whole payment on safe return of the item.
If you state RD on your listing, then people expect 77p (I think that's how much it is) to be towards the postage costs, postage is a very tricky thing on ebay now.
Another way this will backfire is all the INR claims you could get & not be able to defend them.
You need to be open & truthful on your listings.
You could also be cutting down on the people who will bid, I won't bid on cheap small items that are RD, as if the postie requires a signature & I'm not in then it costs more in petrol to get it then the item costs. Or a day sat in waiting for a redelivery, as my post can come anytime from 9am to mid afternoon.
