Tesco Self-Service Coin Counters

After reading a few posts on here about how best to get rid of my evergrowing copper and silver coin savings. I bagged up a bunch of money approx £20 and took it along to my brand new tesco express (it's only been there a week), I had the thought that I after my shop I would just feed in all my coins one by one into the self service machine. To my surprise it turns out that these new machines have a small tray that you can feed handfuls of coins into. :j

They all just slide down the chute and it takes a little time to sort them all, but what a great way to get rid of those coins and it's one in the eye for the Coinstar charges.

Lots of Tescos have these now, not just express. They won't like it if you put too much change in though as it will fill the machine up and they have to take it out of service to be emptied. They don't have as much room to store money in as the Coinstar machines.

Haha, I'll let them deal with that, in the meantime I'll carry on getting rid of my coins :)

  • Our local WhSmiths has no staff on tills now, just the hand holder nudging everyone towards these stupid machines. Her face was a picture when I emptied £3 worth of copper and 5ps to pay for a magazine. Thanks WhSmith for taking all my lose change.

You won't be laughing if it fills up half way through your transaction.

I like using coppers at tesco too because if I don't have enough, I can pay any small amount on my card. So if my transaction is £1 and I only have 88p in coppers, I can pay 12p on my card.

Ive done it before but its hardly new, they're self service tills not coin counters.
  • I do this a lot, I empty my change into the machine then for the remaining balance give it a high value note, say a £10; gives me back large denomination coins or fivers - machine has much more patience than some trouts

But I have also recently got a load of change envelopes and bagged up my coins to take to the bank for real money!

  • Hmmm, interesting. I usually avoid the self service as I like to get value for my shopping experience with a bit of human contact and a smile, something that's highly unlikely with £5 worth of coppers :D

I did this at A's & S's the other week when I had £10 to feed myself and the cat for a week, and my piggy bank yielded up another £3 in shrapnel. Though I would rather go through a staffed till and chat to the cashier, but wouldn't pay for my shopping in pennies with a cashier.

I do usually bag up my coins and put them in the bank though, I don't mind the sorting, it's the same distance to walk to my bank as the nearest Coinstar and the bank doesn't charge a fee so I get to keep it all.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.
