New AVAST V7 causing problems

2»

Comments

  • updated to avast 7 this morning - no problems beforehand on PC (running XP)
afterward IE (version 8 and Firefox v9.01) both would not work correctly in sandboxie.
FF never "came to the screen". it was running (according to Task manager and sandboxie).
IE came up - but type anything in the URL address bar and it froze.

Both worked without issue outside of sandboxie.

emptied my sandbox - emptied FF cache (IE I dont use) and restarted PC.

    No different.
Solution was to update sandboxie to latest version. Was using 3.54.

FF and IE both work now inside sandboxie.

    Not noticed anything with avast.

It re- activated Webrep plugins for FF and IE, which I'd had turned off. The Chrome box was easy to deal with.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Everytime I start my computer, the screen comes up saying to click finish to complete installation. Hopefully, it will eventually go away !!
  • rchp,

You can get rid of it by following the instructions here:

    No, it won't.
you've got to wade in and edit the .ini file.

A point to note, that I have just remembered.

    If you are on vista/7:

Depending on your settings (UAC etc) even with avast self defense off, you will still have trouble saving the file. This is because UAC blocks the saving to ProgramData.

The solution is to run Notepad as administrator, and then you avoid an access denied error. :)

EDIT: Also, the location for the ini file on XP is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\

I updated last night flawlessly, I unchecked the chrome option (already have it), webrep was installed by default but that was easily uninstalled via the option in avast.

interestingly firefox and IE9 both told me webrep addon had been installed and asked me to confirm/activate it (very good IMO) but chrome just let the addon run without telling me it had even been installed.

Avast is not quite as effective in finding viruses and malware as other free AVs, and has their own bloat and annoyances (like Avast's once-a-year registration requirement)

you seem pretty anti-avast care to tell us which other free anti virus programs are better and don't have any bloat/adverts ect?

note that avast doesn't have any annoying advert pop ups (like avira and AVG), I don't know what 'bloat' your are referring to as I have found it to have none, the once-a-year registration only requires an email address to which they never have emailed me once.

but please name a better one, I'm genuinely interested.
