Avast security has just released a new version, V7.0.1407.
Seems to be causing lots of probs including (for some users) installing Google Chrome without asking permission which also wipes any existing installation.

Might be worth holding off the upgrade until they've got it sorted.

I've been using Avira (the free version) for yonks and never had a problem with it. Nor do I know anyone else who has.0

I upgraded to Avast 7 yesterday no obvious problems here.0

Avast....honestly.....0

I updated several machines to Avast 7 yesterday, various OS from XP to Win 7...No problems on any of them. There are complaints on the Avast forum, but then support forums do get more reports of problems rather than praise. Given the number of Avast users worldwide it is hardly suprising some users will experience difficulties, whether it is a bug or user error.0

Avast is not quite as effective in finding viruses and malware as other free AVs, and has their own bloat and annoyances (like Avast's once-a-year registration requirement)0
-
I have had version 7 since before it was an open beta and have not had and significant problems, however I seem to be one that always misses any problems (which is annoying because I would like to be able to try and troubleshoot such things)
That said, there do seem to be some problems. Some people report Chrome being installed over existing installations, messing up that, others report a window being shown on every reboot (a simple fix, changing an ini value, which I don't even have here...) others report a constant scanning of the same file repeatedly...
So there are some teething problems...however being a support forum, there will generally be a bias towards negative comments, rather than positive, so looking at that forum can be subjective.
Beta testing doesn't always catch every bug (remember not everyone tests) and sometimes fixing one thing may introduce another issue...
If you feel you want to wait, then that is obviously your choice, and I suppose that decision is well founded looking at the forum.-Scott-

To not install Chrome, uncheck that option after your computer restarts and you are prompted to click finish (it is small, at bottom left of the finish installation window)0

On one of my machines I got the option to refuse Chrome, on the other, the window popped-up, disappeared immediately and dumped Chrome on my system.
Seems the popup window has a timer on it which is a bit buggy, others on the Avast forums have made similar reports.
No real problem for me as I just uninstalled it, but if you have an existing installation of Chrome with plugins & options all setup, it gets trashed.0 -
Yes, that is the issue. The window disappears too quickly to dismiss. I don't think that there is a known reason for this (from the users anyway) yet...my guess would be a bug in the installer, not reading the installation of chrome properly.-Scott-
