The rising cost of petrol - options?

We recently got rid of our main gas guzzling car and are at the moment using my little 3 door clio, yes we look very much like the clampits as there are 5 of us but it will do for now, we want something with similar running costs but 5 door.
We pay £17 insurance per month and £100 odd tax per year, we use it for my DH to go to work (20-30 mins) and the school run when his shifts allow (10 min drive) and at the weekend and we put approx £20 - £30 in a week.
My DH railed against a sensible small car the last time we bought one hence the big gas guzzler but realising now that we are at least £200 per month better offf without it he is more than resigned to driving a 'hairdryer'.
We now walk to school and back (an hour round trip) and i worked out that even if i got a taxi on the worst weather days it would still be nothing like our previous motoring bill.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
I am very jealous of those figures Pukkamum, they are virtually half what we pay at the moment. I have been looking at the link posted above about DLA and it may be that we qualify for the lower rate. I'm sure her consultant would confirm that. Feel a bit awkward about asking him though.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

You need to have your GP on board if you're going for DLA. It's also worth paying £20 to gain access to the guidelines on the benefits&work site since the current DLA form is designed to trick you into understating the significance of your condition.0

Actually your child's school play's the biggest part in getting awarded DLA or not as they (DLA) will get in touch with teachers and ask questions about your child's daily needs Mon-Fri. GP's don't really play that big a part. Let the school know that you are going to apply for DLA and they will give you the support you need. The form is very lengthy and you have to give the worst case scenerio in each example. Even if they refuse most people who appeal eventually get DLA and back dated. Have a look at netmums on how to fill in the form. Remember you are entiltled to make a claim. As I said before good luck.0
