Is it possible to stop the bacs payment and resend the faster payment?

As I pointed out in post #3 there are no BACS payments (of this type at least) any more. If it wasn't possible to make the payment immediately it will have been marked to be sent later but still by FPS. The BACS message is a red herring, sounds like their messgaes need to be updated.

There seems to have been some sort of error with faster payments at HBOS in the last 24 hours.

A standing order I have with Intelligent Finance also reverted to BACS.

For those who say BACS no longer exists, I believe this is incorrect. In order to implement the Payment Services Directive, BACS should not be accessible for personal transactions but I believe it still exists for certain business transactions. It therefore stands to reason that a personal payment can still travel via BACS if the faster payment system fails for some reason.

Obviously you are right that the BACS system still exists to process transactions such as Direct Dredits, but I'm not convinced that it is available to process failed FPS transactions any more. There would need to be a catastrophic failure of FPS for it to be unavailable for 2 days (the time in which the payments directive requires payments to be completed). However, I'm willing to be proved wrong so if your transaction actually does take 3 days to arrive let us know.

I had the same problem yesterday.

I have just checked the account and the payment was still pending to leave on the 26th.

I have cancelled this and did it again and it went through as FP.

I've just done the same thing and it's also gone through as a FP this time.

  • The note on the Halifax On Line system yesterday (Fri 24 Feb 12) stated that the recipient bank (HSBC in my case) "is no longer accepting faster payments on this account". Lloyds TSB online system said the same thing. This is untrue and they should both be shot for telling porkies (I verified this with HSBC). You could make faster payments from Lloyds TSB to HSBC over the phone (Lloyds TSB can tell you if this will be successful beforehand, wheres the Halifax could not - potentially taking 3 days longer). Odd as Lloyds TSB and HSBC are both part of the LLOYDS BANKING GROUP and now use very similar online systems. The same thing happened last year when the Halifax stopped faster payments to Santander and blamed them for pulling out of the Faster Payments system, when they had not done so.
  • Funny how this kind of thing tends to happen on a FRIDAY / BANK HOLIDAY so the banks can make an extra three or four days interest out of your money !!

Since when were Lloyds TSB and HSBC both part of LBG. Nothing worse than someone claiming that two banks use similar systems when they actually don't know what they are talking about.

When I tried it was a Halifax account to a Halifax CC. The latest one was done on a Friday afternoon, however it didn't show up as leaving my account until Monday :(

On a related note, I managed to make a faster payment from my Halifax current account to my Halifax Mortgage through online banking (at least, online banking told me it worked). Up until now I've not even been able to do a one off BACS payment between the accounts either online or in branch.
