Sorry, just wondered when the next stages are to be announced?

  • It's a rolling roll out I think until 2014.

As it requires the replacement of the street cabinets with fibre (instead of copper), it is easy to spot when your local cabinet is replaced, and the arrival of FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) services. YOU don't get the fibre - so fibre broadband to the door is still a dream.

Fttc doesn't replace the 'copper' cabinet, another cabinet is installed in close proximity to the existing cab, the new cabinet is the fibre to the cab element.
The pcp, primary cross connection point still provides the the telephony services via a copper cable back to the exchange...in some areas BT are delivering fibre to the home but this is very expensive for bt to provide so is never going to be as common as fttc, but BT are going to roll out an on demand ftth service where if you are in a fttc area and are prepared to pay they will provide fibre from the fttc cab to your home and crank up the speed

The issue is the same, when you see a bigger box either adjacent or replacing your normal street cabinet, you'll be aware that fibre has now reached your street.

The REAL issue, is of course BT's attempt to fool the public with these 'fibre' claims. The cable networks all have fibre to the cabinet, and BT is simply playing 'catch up'. But as a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, BT (and Virgin) talking about 'superfast' fibre, forget to explain the consumer isn't going to see ANY fibre, it'll be the same old, same old copper as before.

Strangely, the ASA see nothing wrong with these spurious claims - yet even 10 years ago BT could have (still) misleadingly promoted their fibre trunk network for this same feature. Only fibre to the consumer is true fibe, ans the soon as consumers realise this, the better.

appreciate that, but already seen it. As always BT (and other broadband providers) looking after denser population centres only (thus fulfilling two thirds of the population).
  • It always has and always will be about the densest populated areas, that's where they will make their money, and why there are broadband black-spots in most rural areas.
