Good place to buy a Mattress

  • Hi,
I bought a Sealy one in last year from Reids for under £200, it was just the delivery that pushed it up. I managed to be really confident and went in with the idea of knocking them down on price. They took £50 off but wouldn't throw in free delivery as well.
Pretty good deal and i've never loved my bed so much, which is possibly not a good thing!!! :D

I bought my new mattress about a month ago as my old one was a spring one and it was really uncomfy and gave me back troubles.

This is the one I bought.. I got a King Size for £179.99 and trust me it was well worth it, and in my opinion not all that expensive either!

  • We need a new mattress next year. Plan is to go to Norwich and test out the mattressman mattresses and then order online. Their shop is near the railway station.
  • I have no idea how anyone can begin to even think of ordering a mattress untried/untested from the internet.

If you actually go into a bed store & see how much difference there is between beds (comfort wise) with seemingly the same specification....well, it's astonishing.

Re trying in a bed superstore first & noting down the name to order online.....well, that would be a great idea if it wasn't for the fact the bed superstores are wise to such a practice & therefore have unique names (therefore difficult to be sure the one you want online is the same).

Re memory foam beds.....Sweatsville! - make sure if you're going this route it has a coolmax cover (a hi tech fabric made by du pont).

I still think the best bed is a pocket sprung/memory foam combination, obviously the more springs the better. Here's a guide for the cheapest prices for spring/memory foam (king size) I've found...

£385 delivered - 1200 springs with memory foam & coolmax
£450 delivered - 1500 springs with memory foam & coolmax
£540 delivered - 2000 springs with memory foam & coolmax

...bear in mind that not all memory foam is the same....some manafacturers use cheaper density 40kg/m3 whereas the better foam weighs in at 60kg/m3

We are going for the a mattress with 2000 springs & 60kg/m3....in the shops it costs about £750 (& that's after haggling down from £899!), but like I say the best deal I've found for a comparable mattress online is £539

I presume the one for £539 you are refering to is the Eros?

Does the mattress for £750 have memory foam on both sides so that it can be turned (something that is especially important with pocket sprung mattresses)??

Also as far as buying on line is concerned. Find a seller who gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee so that there is no risk if you decide the mattress isn't suitable. The gigantic savings (sometimes up to 75%) you can make by buying on line can make it worth the risk, especially if you can return it if you don't like it.

Alas no, but a Coolmax 2000.....which unsurprisingly has 2000 springs (whereas the Eros has 1500 springs), a Coolmax outer fabric by Du Pont (Eros doesn't have this)....also it has 60kg/m3 memory foam (I can't be sure what the Eros uses).

To be fair...the mattress that we want, the price is quite high at most outlets, but I've found one place that will do me one for £539 delivered in King Size.

You do know that there is no advantage in having 2000 springs over 1500 don't you?? Any more than 800 in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do.

As for the coolmax......unless you like your bed to be very cool, thenit is a bit of a gimmick that plays on the myths about memory foam being very hot and sweaty. Memory foam actually absorbs heat from your body. This then reacts with the foam which softens it allowing it to mould to your body. The scare stories about memory foam being too hot have developed for two reasons.

    1) if the memory foam is on top of latex foam, then air can't circulate inside the mattress to take the heat away from the memory foam. In a pocket sprung/memory foam mattress with vents the air can circulate. The Eros also has a special breathable material both top and bottom.

    2) some manufacturers use a very deep (and often low density) memory foam. This is also a sales gimmick. Memory foam should be between 2" and 2 1/2" deep (3" is an absolute maximum, but not ideal). If the memory foam is too deep, or too soft (should be between 50 & 75kg per m3 depending on body weight and personal preference), or both, then you will sink into it and it will wrap around you, thus preventing your body heat escaping.

The Eros is available in two desities of memory foam:
soft (which isn't really that soft) 51-55kg m3. 40-70N nominal hardness range.

    firm 58-62kg m3. 70-100N nominal hardness range.

I did actually message you with the foam densities.

I am looking for a new mattress myself.
I want a pocket sprung model. Once you have had one of these you won't go back to the normal type. The springs are not linked together , so you get proper support all over and no roll-together.
Cheapest i have found is on ebay. Mattressman is quite expensive - they want £225 for the cheapest double pocket sprung mattress ( 1000 springs). Ebay seller comfy-living-uk has one for £164.99 delivered on buy-it-now ( and its a better spec with more springs)

Totally agree with 'once youve had one of these you wont want to go back to normal type'. We used to have a normal mattress then when i had a car accident which i got paid some money out from i used some of it to buy a good bed. Due to having had a bad back from the accident and sometimes rolling out of bed and crawling on my hands and knees due to pain i was prepared to pay good money for the best i could get.

We went to Allied Carpets as well as other places but from Allied we got a King size Millbrook pocket sprung with sprung base. The deal was you got a king size (£1000) for the price of a double (£800) but also it was half price sale so we paid £400. This was about 7 or 8 years ago now and the bed is as comfy as ever. Ive always used a quilted matress protector and also made sure we turn it regularly.

We were told that the Millbrook range of beds are hand made, stitched and screwed and glued joints etc. Take a look at https://www.millbrookbeds.co.uk

Lets just say, im known to be a bit careful with my money ;) (true MSE style)
but theres no way now i would go for anything else now. In non MSE style i would get in debt for one if it came to it just to have the pocket sprung, i wouldnt have anything else. You spend a good few hours in bed (not always sleeping, most of the time on MSE ;) ) and its worth getting a good one. The same as with shoes, its worth getting a good comfy pair, as if youre not in bed then youre in your shoes (yes i know, some may go barefoot or wear slippers but you know what i mean).

If going for memory foam remember they don't breathe -so you are more likely to sweat. Its natural to move during sleep and these restrict you from doing so too. This is why it takes a while to get used to them.

I also agree, but you don't want to make the wrong choice, so be very careful. Check out the feedback for the same mattress that you are interested in, even messgae previous buyers to find out what they think about the mattress after a few weeks of use. Also find out what the sellers returns policy is as some won't accept returns at all, some will only accept faulty returns, and most but not all sellers make you pay the postage for returns.

You can find some real bargains on beds and mattresses on ebay, but you can also find some real lemons. This thing is, don't just go for the cheapest because it is the cheapest, but also don't go for the most expensive because you think you get what pay for. And definately don't go for well known brand names because you think they are better quality (I'm not going to name names, but some, but not all of the well known brand names are complete rubbish, and I would never sell them).
