My friend got wise to the CP Plus Scammers.

A year or so ago a friend told me he had been 'fined' for overstaying in a motorway service carpark. Apparently he was there for 3 hours from about 1am to 4am. He fell for it and paid up promptly to minimise the 'fine'.

What a shame he didn't mention this to me before having his money stolen. I explained that it wasn't a fine, just a scam where a bunch of parasites try to extort money from motorists by pretending to have some legal clout.

Fast forward to today. He tells me he's now being chased by CP Plus for another alleged overstay a few months ago. So far he's ignored the three letters from CP Plus and the first 2 from Debt Recovery Plus.

Just for reassurance I showed him the sticky at the top of the board where he was able to see that he should next expect another letter from Debt Recovery Plus offering to settle for a reduced payment.

He has a wide circle of friends and is making sure they all know about this scam.

  • That is what we need! And do all his friends have wide circles of friends too?
  • I'm sure they will be spreading the word about these scamming parasites and their underhand lowlife con trick.

Well done for getting the word out there, though he did fall for it the first time I count this as an ongoing success story :)

And the most annoying thing is that at 1am the one thing which isn't on your mind as you pull up to sleep is to have the fun and games at using an automatic payment system which uses a 0845 number.

Scrap car park payments in motorway service car-parks
  • What car park payments?

    What car park payments?

Most motorway service car-parks are "free" for the first 2 hours, then a £5-£10 fee for 2 to 24 hours. They should scrap the 2-24 hour fee.

Safety first always, I mean if you come off a motorway at 1am into one of these, are you likely to look around for signs in regards to payment etc on unlit car parks ? And let's assume for a moment here, what happens if you don't have a credit/debit card ? Or maybe no mobile phone ?

If you are tired you need sleep , if that takes you 6 hours or more, so be it ! At that time of day the bloody place is empty anyway.

    Who is "they"?

So far as I am concerned it has already been scrapped. If I need to sleep I will do so and won't be paying to have a safety break in a deserted car park. Cheek.

What I'm trying to say is that the governement should make motorway service area car-parks free, not just free for the first 2 hours, so you can have a sleep safe in the knowledge that you won't be getting scam-o-grams in the mail.

I agree. You can stay as long as you like without charge in an ordinary lay-by. So what's different about motorway service areas? They are only glorified lay-bys when all is said and done.
