Seller lives abroad - are there any potential issues?

Hi there, we have placed an offer on a house and the estate agent has informed us that the vendor lives in Ireland (not sure whether it's Northern Ireland or Eire yet).
The only issue we have had so far is that the the estate agent is having trouble getting in touch with them to convey the offer.
This led me to thinking, are there any legal issues that might arise from buying from a 'foreign' seller, e.g. would they have to have a mainland UK based solicitor to complete the process. Might there be any potential other issues we might face. Can we pursue claims (hoping there won't be any) against vendor if they are abroad? Does the completion process still happen in the same way (assuming they use a non-uk bank)
Has anyone been through a similar situation to this?
