    OK I have a dilemma. Advice/help please?

We currently have one lonely ex-batt chicken. She's going to get darn cold by herself in the hen house (which can hold 3 or 4 comfortably) and I have an offer of two more chickens. However, as you all know, the house is going on the market shortly and once we've sold it we'll be renting for a couple of months until we find our new home. I may not be able to keep chickens at a rented property.

I don't want to get rid of our chicken, I'm happy to have a couple of new ones to keep her company and warm and we will want chickens as soon as we get our new house. But does anyone have any suggestions for "boarding" for chickens, like you can with cats and dogs? They would have their own house and run. Our next-door-but-one neighbour has chickens so I can ask her if she'd be able to board them for us, but I'd like to know if anyone else has any good ideas.

    Thoughts?

Google "Boarding chickens" & you'll find there are some in Essex so not so far way.
You could always have a little reccy in advance to see what the place was like.
There also something called Chicken Sitters believe it or not :rotfl:

Oh. Be careful how you say that :D

Well....the wood pellet boiler is on.

It's been on and off all day, the tank still has not warmed up. The radiators have scant heat in them...but it's something. Only in the new part of the house mind. Its eleven degrees with them on in the kitchen...brrrrrr. Had it warmer than that with the electric heater.

We now are aiming for Saturday evening for heating and no set date yet for hot water. ( though we should have water to the utility room tap now. ).

Something I had not thought about was the smell of the woodpellets. They are LOVELY. There is a very faint clovey scent and I think that is great.

  • Oh wow, such quick replies and so helpful!:T

LIR you're actually about halfway between here and where we hope to end up so it wouldn't have been so far-fetched - thank you kindly!

Alfie - I can't guarantee that the next owners will know anything about how to look after them, it's risky for "the girls".

Itsme - really? What brilliant ideas, maybe I should offer something similar once I have a bit of land. I had better not word any advert after a few drinks though :rotfl:

Well I spoke to the neighbour and she doesn't have a problem with it. It was nice to have a chat about chickens, and she may let us have a Pekin c0ckerel to take with us when we go, which will be a great start to the Poultry Empire I plan on building! I've loved Pekins since I bought a day-old chick (with a few others) and she grew into a lovely friendly little bird who'd ride round the garden on my wrist. So I've now organised to collect two chickens at the weekend, and I'm really excited! Also it saves worrying about how cold our poor bird is going to get during the winter. Bless her, she's still laying 2 or 3 a week and she's well over 4 years old.

I have wonderful friends:A Thank you all!

Haven't read all the posts I've missed, but hope everyone's fine & not flooded out.

It's been so wet, but we managed to get two guys to help get some roofing on these past couple of days so really see a difference. If it's reasonably dry they'll be back tomorrow to finish fitting a Velux at the back.

The house has got very wet inside with all the down pours, but nowt we could do. Must try & get a de humidifier I suppose.

Y'know... I'm not sure we're near anyone :D However, we are nearer. Whenever we travel anywhere we are reminded just how remote we are in terms of connections. The roads are just rubbish! Although on the face of it they are A roads, they are mainly single trackand if you get stuck behind an oil tanker or tractor, well, you're !!!!!!ed!

If my memory serves me correctly, CTC is near Swansea which is about an hour and a half away if you rush!

Our biggest issue with getting out and about, however is that we have to pick children up every few hours (the girls are in nursery mornings only, so need collecting at 12, and our son is in school and needs collecting at 3). This is tying in the extreme. We are going to feel sooooo like we've been released from an open prison when they are all at school full time and we can actually go out for the day.

Sorry for the rant. I just had to get that off my chest :o
