Federation of Master Builders

Should I only hire a member of the FMB?

Got Two builders, both seem fine, references and photos of previous jobs. The non FMB builder, I visited his current extension project this week. Price wise its about £1k difference (FMB more expensive). One is £15k and the other 16k.

We want to add an extension and undertake a few other jobs based on an architects drawings.

Should I take membership of FMB as a sign of quality or is it a red herring?

Its a club you pay to belong to like most trade associations. Does membership give credibility? Only you can decide.

  • and more to the point, what will the FMB do if things go down the toilet?
  • Membership is no sign of quality or guarantee of a good job.

If you want to go down that road then you should be looking at https://www.trustmark.org.uk , which is a government sponsored scheme. Again no guarantees, but membership vetting is more stringent

The vetting procedure does not mean much, apart from filtering out grossly incompetent builders, and those without the proper insurance certificates etc. Can you expand on your comments? Thanks.

I'm having to guess what some of the above means. I did go to the FMB web site, which is why I think the vetting process only has limited worth. Hence why I asked you to explain your post. Are you connected with the FMB?
