    FMB are there in theory for protection of customer but they have bery little teeth in reality. however weeding out real cowboys is no bad thing so it does stand for something

    The vetting process is similar to that used by CheckATrade, albeit CAT do not have anyone on site to inspect a job. And yet it is quite common for CAT trades to be cowboys. Having the correct insurance, having traded for 5 years, and being able to do one decent job does not mean the trade is not a cowboy. As to whether any trades on FMB are cowboys, I have no evidence for that, so to be fair what I say is supposition.

    so its one check, but of course not the only one. as stated taking up references, visiting a job and getting a feel for if I can work with the builder should be done.

    the problem if they quote it too cheap is they might add more on as its only a quote...try and get a written contract..
