OK I moved into this property in April last year so dont have a full years usage yet but ive looked at my previous bills and have the following information. Ive also checked the meter and it has m3 on the front of it so I think im being correctly billed. The current meter reading is definitely correct as was the starting one.

18 April correct opening reading 6630
18 May estimated reading 6819 so 189 cubic metres equates to 2148 kwh
    this was 220 kwh @ 6.914
    1928 kwh @ 3.008 total £73.20

    18 May estimated reading 6819
26 May read by EON 6883
2 Sept estimated reading 7134 so 251 cubic metres equates to 2852 kwh
    this was 786 kwh @ 6.914
    2793 kwh @ 3.008 total £138.35

    2 Sept estimated reading 7134
13 Sept estimated reading 7259 125 cubic metres equates to 1424 kwh
    this was 81 kwh @ 9.914
    1343 kwh @ 3.008 total £46.00

    PRICE INCREASE

    estimated reading 13 Sept 7259
read by EON on 22 Nov 8052 793 cubic metres equates to 9033 kwh
    this was 521 @ 8.165
    8512 @ 3.552 total £344.89

read by EON 22 Nov 8052
read by EON 21 Feb 9634 1582 cubic metres used equates to 18021 kwh
    this was 668 kwh @ 8.165
    17353 kwh @ 3.552 total £670.92

all totals are purely and simply from usage and not being carried over from previous bills.
Thank you for any help whatsoever. I just dont understand how our usage can be nearer to the average annual consumption when im sitting here cold.

a bit more information. Having checked the timer its on all the time but is controlled by the thermostat and that is set up as follows.

    6:30 am 20.5
10:00am drops down to 19.5 im in this slot at the moment and the heating isnt on so its not below 19.5 where the thermostat is on the first floor although it certainly feels like it in the living room.
    14:55 up to 20.5
    22:30 drops down to 17
  • sorry there were lots of posts whilst I was typing the last one up. I sincerely hope there is something wrong as the cost is just horrendous.

Ive not had a meter change in the time ive been here but dont know if it was changed before I moved in.

Definitely depends on the building, I'm in a newbuild apartment (March 2010), and the place has never been below 17 degrees, and that was Christmas day 2010 (the temp outside was -12 degrees). The apartment is south facing, so gets a lot of heat from the soon, has a glass balcony and big glass French doors (is glass supposed to magnify heat?), and the place has solar power, which amongst other things, heats the hot water.

Because it's ceramic hobs and electric oven, does not require the central heating to be on, and gets additional heat from facing south etc, I have used zero gas in the 2 years I've lived here.

    :)
  • Yes but can it depend on the building so much so that im using nearly a years worth of gas in 3 months? I own a new build in another part of the country to that im living in now and I know how much more efficient they are but this place is just ridiculous.

As so many of your reads are estimated, it's not possible to draw any meaningful conclusions about the seasonal pattern-to avoid that you need to be submitting your own reads at least every 3 months.
But since your consumption over the last 10 months totals an incredible 33,478kWh, you are looking at an annual total of around 40,00kWh. That's huge, and not apparently the result of profligate usage of heating.
So this is one of the rare occasions when I 'd say that a meter fault is a strong possibility. Talk to eon. Although you don't have figures that you can compare season to season, if they were the previous supplier, then they should have data for previous years that may support the theory of a meter fault. Given the bills you are getting, I'd say that £50 spent on a meter change (if it proves not to be faulty) would be a worthwhile gamble. Start keeping a daily log of consumption.
Edit: you said that the heating is hardly on, but you are running it all night (albeit on a low temp setting)?

Yes Ill give them a call and see what they say.

I agree the heating is running through the night in theory but in practice its not actually on as the temperature doesnt drop below 17. The boiler is in my bedroom and I would hear it kick in if it was running.

well ive just spent 22 minutes on the phone to EON and got nowhere. They say its correct and they dont do average annual consumptions. based on a 4 bed house with 13 radiators and 3 people living in it im using the correct amount and it could infact be an awful lot worse apparently. She said im using on average 17 units per day and someone with similar circumstances could be using upto 55. I can however pay £90 for a meter check.

I guess im now house hunting.

Those figures are laughable. 17 cu m per day is 6,205 per annum, or 70,505kWh-that would cost around £2,500pa! You are using less than half that.
    55 units a day would be 228,000 kWh-about £8000 pa!
So I can only suggest you try again and hope to speak to someone who has a basic level of knowledge and training.
You will not be charged for the meter change if it proves to be faulty (or it will be refunded).

Yeah she said I would get the money refunded if the meter was faulty but its a risk isnt it. What if it isnt faulty and I am using that much.

I told her the thermostat was on the first floor and although it was set at 19.5 degrees during the day it didnt actually come on because its warmer upstairs. Told her im sitting downstairs cold but she said the thermostat takes the temperature from the whole house so it probably was coming on. I thought thermostats only took the temperature from where they were sited which is why you should be careful where you place them. How on earth can a thermostat one floor up know the temperature in the living room and if it was switching the heating on then I wouldnt be so bloody cold. She told me to have it switched to off during the day and that having it on from 14:55 to 10:30 at 20.5 was a long time to have it on. Felt like telling her where to go but I held my tongue whilst she asked for yet more money each month.

So ill turn it off completely during the day and monitor my daily usage and see if it drops from 17 units per day.

    Thank you everyone.
