I rent at the moment probably will do in the same place for at least a year or two to come. I've put pictures up and put some fixtures up as well (all 3 walls of my living room are _covered_) in photos, and the hall and bedroom are getting that way) I've moved things around and if I wanted to paint I could. In fact the LL/LA would like that as the paint job isn't the best and the hall is currently a two tone hall due to being half painted! As long as I didn't paint every room black or bright pink I can't see the LA being bothered at all.

I feel sorry for people who live in rented accommodation who can't even put a picture up or put a lick of paint.
    Oh, you wee bazza!
  • I can't imagine how living in a place where you are not allowed to paint it or change the carpet or alter the layout of the garden without permission can ever seem like home.

I'm not remotely interested in DIY so can't imagine wasting time and energy worrying about the colour of walls. I'm fairly certain I won't be on my deathbed bemoaning the landlord's choice of carpet from several years ago.

Is it a very modern thing to obsess about home decor? My parents have lived in the same house for nearly 30 years and have only recarpeted and rewallpapered once.

With the garden - I always just had a tonne of plant pots out there (I was damned if I was doing a nice landscaping jobbie on someone else's asset and leaving it when we moved!)... walls, yep - magnolia will always bug the ever loving snot out of me - but I had some bright wall hangings and pictures and at least it was a plain base colour - but to be honest, every landlord I ever rented from had the "if you want to paint - just ask and as long as it's not something ridiculous it's likely to not be a problem" line of reasoning. By the time I unpacked, had my books on my bookshelves, sofas and throws out - I've only ever felt not-settled in one rented house, and that one was more because of the location/neighbours (I was pushed into it by my mother essentially) than anything else.

And that's WITH being a woman who likes interior design stuff, loves colours and everything else - the decoration restrictions didn't really bother me that much - apart from the flat that had really dark depressing blue wallpaper in a naturally very dark, long room - could have been improved so much with a brighter, warmer colour... cracking landlord that one though - just with the colour coordination of a visually impaired bat!

Oh she's hilarious if you look back at her previous articles... utter comedy reading - may rot your brain though.

We have had our family home since 1976 and the colour/style of decor of both the house and the garden has been changed more times than I can imagine!

Maybe it depends upon your personality!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Surely the carpet must be threadbare by now?????
