  • Don't get me started  What about those packs of mini carrots and apples aimed at kids ? They cost way more than the standard carrot/apple and come in a packet. Why not just give your child half an apple or a few carrot sticks ? It really isn't rocket science

My sister in law buys things like the jacket potato firstly because she has far more money than sense and secondly because she is lazy. I know people buy those sorts of foods either because they do not like cooking or do not have the time but do they honestly like the taste of them? I have been to friends' houses and had things like frozen yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, instant mash (one of the worst convenience foods in my opinion) and they taste YUK. So you are paying more for food than contains loads of salt, sugar, additives and e numbers and basically it tastes awful!!

I used to buy some ready made stuff. Ready made meals (chinese/thai etc), ready to roast parsnips and potatoes. Never bought grated cheese - my Mom always grated her own so I never even thought of doing anything else ;)

Ready meals ended when I realised the amount of fat and salt in them - and that I can cook the same myself, much cheaper!

It was a chance (rather sharp) comment from someone on this board that got me off ready raost potatoes. I mentioned them as an option (can't remember the thread) and got "err... yuck" thrown back at me. Was very embarrassed :o Went off posting for a while
I am still learning how to get the potatoes roasted nicely, but I am having fun experimenting!
I do not buy any convenience food now.

  • The other day I saw a great big articulated container van which was carrying ICE cubes. If the planet is in such a bad way why don't they put a stop to things like that?
  • I love m & s food once in a blue moon as a treat. It`s down to free choice isn`t it? If folks want to spend their cash on ready made food then what is wrong with that?

I cook from fresh every day and am constantly on the go in the kitchen but I do understand the needs of very-tired people coming home after work. Not everyone can get their heads around forward planning
  • I do a lot of cooking from scratch but I do like the odd thing from M&S. For Valentines day I went to Marks and got the whole meal so that neither of us had to spend ages in the kitchen, filet steak, those jacket pots mentioned by the op, fresh veg all chopped and ready and a lovely pud that we could pop in the oven for 15 mins while we ate. 2 bottles of pink wine and all for £35 quid - what it would have cost for a meal out would have been unthinkable so a good compromise for us.

I used to laugh at grated cheese too but now I have arthritis in my hands and can't even mash potato without help it would be a different thing. OH or DD usually do it but if it came to it I would buy grated cheese!!!

M & S is great for nice food and I occasionally buy from there. When I do, there I am with my basket with perhaps a maximum of 6 items (usually their 3 for 2 ones). I'm amazed at the shoppers who do their main shop there and have a full trolley load of stuff. When I'm tired after work I feel so jealous!

I work full time and can understand some evenings not wanting to cook. Financially it makes more sense to cook double of your own meals and freeze so those days you have your own HM ready meals but for me, it's a treat not to have to cook.

So once a month of so I buy one jar of pasta sauce - the kind where you don't have to even cook the pasta first. Then if OH feels like "cooking dinner" one day when I'm at work and he's not, he can manage it just fine :rotfl: He can manage other things too, like chops or fish fillets, but things like making shepherds pie would be a bit too much to expect ;)

Edit: We don't have takeaways, very rarely eat out (about once every three months or so) and so a jar of sauce for a couple of quid or microwave rice every now and again is my compromise!
