Why?
Do you often drive without any working lights?
Post up your car and route, at night we'll have no chance if you decide to stop and it's pitch black.0 -

I've seen plenty of medical reports and doctors' bills for people, who it turned out weren't even involved in an accident and had just made it up.0 -

You should be driving so as to be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear, not driving so as to plough into a huge stationary object because it's dark. If you can't see an unlit car, how are you going to see children, animals and other unlit obstructions; do you just plough in to those too?
Perhaps it's time to hang up the keys.
Besides, you're derailing the thread anyway. The OP only said the brake lights may not have been working, he/she did not mention anything about any other lights not working or about the incident happening at night. The OP is completely at fault for driving in to the back of the car.0 -

No.
I'm just with the op on this, and honest enough to admit I'm a normal driver, and expect to use brake lights as a visual clue the car in front is stopping.
I don't have a go at the op for not being one of the drivers that would never need to see brake lights, and would never hit the back of the car in front, so maybe the ones that believe that, and never worry about it, as it couldn't possibly happen to them, should hang up the keys, and leave this thread alone, if they have nothing helpful to say.0
