Changing my oil

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry..
It has about 110,000 miles on it...
The place that changes my oil gives me two options- to either get it changed by a certain date or when it reaches a certain mileage (whichever comes first). At this point, I have totally forgot about it and I am 1000 miles past and 5 months past the date. Do you guys see any dangers in me still driving my car? Typically, how many miles can you go over to still keep your car safe? Any advice would be appreciated.

I wouldn't say you're in any particular danger, no. There's plenty of people that don't seem to service their car for years on end. These people are stupid.

It won't do much good, but it shouldn't be catastrophic - just get it done asap. And probably get a full service rather than just an oil change.

1000 miles and 5 months isn't critical. The oil is still going to work, albeit not at its best. I've been told that modern oils are designed to work up to twice the published intervals. I still recommend booking it in at your earliest convenience. IMHO, regular oil changes are the most cost-effective way of keeping an engine healthy.

depends on the usage of vehicle, take me as an example 2 years ago i had a oil change done, people say it should be done once a year, however when i bought my car from my brother he hadnt done it for 3 years, and i never actually thought about it myself, 2 years down the line, so 5 years in total before i had the oil change done, now after i had the oil change done, to this day i havent had another one done, not because of price, but simply because of the fact they say 5000miles per oil change ok the other part says 1 year i would think that would depend on distance travelled.
which is why i'm saying this. due to the fact i only did a distance of 1200miles in the first year after having it done, and then another 1000miles in the 2nd this being the 3rd year, and not having done much in milage yet, i'm not to concerned.
Mind you saying that, i do need to top up my oil due to checking it today and then checking prices online but cant seem to find a decent price. anyone know how much oil you need to take it from minimum to maximum ?
And anyone know where to buy 5L of 10/40 for a reasonable price. how good is the asda own brand for £16. remember when that was £2 a litre.

should state the car i suppose well its a ford escort 1.8L gti, engines still good, but body is rusty. rear wheel arches dont you know. common thing.

how longs a bit of string? you could go on driving till it grenades that could be another 10,000 miles but it wont do fuel consumption or emissions any good, for a petrol it can kill the cat and cost you more then an oil change

1 to 1.5 liters from min to max. you not worried about 3years worth condensation in the sump mixing with the oil and reducing its lubricating ability?

the car belonged to my brother before me, and i had the car 2years before having the oil changed, and i thought my brother who had the car 3 years had it done once, but he didnt so it actually went 5years+ whoever owned the car before my brother when they did a oil change.

ok. i put in 1litres worth of oil £8 from a motor factors, should have got a 2litre 5/30 bottle up asda for £8
note: i said it was UNDER the minimum when i checked, well it was January when i last checked i think maybe december,
also note the car is a S reg, and i'll probably be scraping it this year anyway, at my last MOT it passed but the recommendations page did have 10 things on it, when i asked for a quote on the recommendations they estimated it at £650, and i only paid £300 for the car.

the year before i paid £300 for welding, due to the snow we had in Jan/feb 2010, caused a lot of rust underneath the chasis. and thats all that was wrong with it.

And considering the cost of insurance went from £273 to a renewal quote of £522 last year an increase of 93%, no accidents, no claims, 1 year extra aka 6years no claims discount which i was told was a 75% discount, changed insurers and got it down to £460 fully comprehensive. 3rd party fire and theft would have been more.
This year i'm using that 93% as a basis of my next insurance premium so i might not bother, and due to petrol price increases the past week alone its gone up 3p per litre on top of that in august theres suppose to be another 3p-5p increase and we have yet to have the budget which i guess means another 3p increase, let alone what increases in car tax will be on top.

I'll be sitting down when my renewal quote comes through, i expect it to be around £950-1000 even though i havent "touch wood" had a accident.

Look after it, that car will be running years after most modern image badged garbage half its age has been consigned to the scrap heap.

A modern car needs so little service, the only thing that is likely to be catostrophic for the engine is the oil and filter change.

That said as above if it's still running at the prescribed level all will be well, just get it changed, give it the best oil it can take and get ready for the next 110k miles.

Do it annually during the chritmas holiday or around your birthday, it's not a lot to remember, has it got an mot? you wouldn't have got a reminder for that either:D:D
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Oil changing is actually very subjective, depends on on how hard you drive, the weather, the type of journey (long/short/town/motorway), short journeys and hammering the crap out of it would be the worst case.

When a manufacturer states service intervals, they use a bad average and then check versus their competitors to make sure they don't get nudged out of the market (especially fleet vehicles).

5-10k overdue probably isn't going to do any harm at all, unless you drive like a fool.
