Cathy, you are are star! Used your tip about putting lentils in mince to stretch it out, no one noticed and the kids commented that my sheperds pie was gorge, nicer than usual!! Any more tips like that on how to cut your food bills by stretching things out a bit more? With 2 hungry kids in the house, I really could use em!

I just want to say, thanks for this message board. I have long been a fan of old home making books & wartime recipes (in order to be able to stay home and look after the family while living on 1 fairly low income)
People think I am mad to worry about saving the pennies, so it is really nice to have found a whole lot of other people who are doing the same sort of things.
    Thank you again!

your not mad,  your a clever girl, instead of paying out £120 a week on childcare your being a full time mum and saving yourself all the aggro and hassles of being a working mum, (I know cos I did it for a while through neccessity) but I had a free childminder (MUM) ;D

I watch friends daughters  worn out  through getting the kids ready for school and nursery  rush them there  rush to work, worry all day about the baby in the nursery,  rush out at lunch time to shop, and that costs a fortune cos its all convenience foods, then rush to nursery, pick baby up and rush home  cook  clean  wash  etc

and most of the cash they are earning is going on child care and convenience foods and clothes they wouldnt need if they didnt have to go to work, petrol and those pesky collections they have all the timein work, lunch money, make up etc.

unless your earning a vast amount of cash, I think with a bit of budgeting and a lot less hard work, a lot of girls who go out to work could stay home if they wanted too,.

depends if they want to or not of course thats their perogative.
    ;D

    Thanks for that, Cathy,
But clever "girl" is probably a bit much, 'cos I've been doing this job for a while - nearly 22 years in fact ;) and am about to become a granny for the first time any day now....
But as we have decided to home educate I am still doing this job full time - with education thrown in for good measure!
But I think you are doing a fantastic job here, wish I had had all this advice and encouragement when I first started.

I think the granny bit is very irresponsible of you

have you never heard of the pill??

    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

sit em in front of the discovery channel all day

I went to a posh grammar school and I swear Ive learned more off the discovery channels than I ever learned at school, ive volunteered to home educate my grandkids if I ever have any. please god I dont as that would mean my years of brainwashing my kids not to have kids failed ;)
