Hi, I noticed someone mentioned using an old Mrs. Beeton book. I have a great old cookery book called THE RADIATION COOKERY BOOK, which was published to coincide with the New World gas cookers and the invention of the regulo for different temperatures - previously it had been more pot luck whether things burnt or not. There are all the old favourite recipes in this book which was printed in several editions between the 1930s and the 1950s. Though not strictly a "use your leftovers" book there would be plenty of opportunities to do so in these recipes. You could probably get a copy in a secondhand book shop without too much trouble.
I also have some old woodwork books which are great for using old scrap timber to make all sorts of ingenious items. Modern ones are often glorified advertisements which make you think you need huge expensive tools to make simple things like bookcases.
Those books from the 1930s with titles like "Home-Lovers Encyclopedia" are also mines of information and very practical. In fact a trip to a secondhand bookshop or charity shop book section, etc. will probably yield any amount of money-saving old style material. You can often find this sort of book at car boot sales too. :)

Hi, I have just been given 2 cookery books dating from 1948 & 49, just after the war but when food was still scarce and subject to rationing. They are in cartoon form, and the story in the cartoons is about a young couple who marry in 1946 and the girl doesn't know how to cook. Each cartoon was published in the daily mirror, with either her parents or her neighbours showing her how to make different recipes - with the restrictions that were around with the food shortages & rationing etc. Of necessity the recipes are all very low fat & economical. I have tried one recipe so far, but there are a few that I wouldn't even attempt (for example several recipes are shown for making whale meat taste interesting ;D :o ???
At some point it must have been decided that her husband ought to learn something too, so there are a whole lot of cartoon strips dedicated to Dad showing him how to grow vegetables on an allotment, and also how to do various household tasks.
Another lot of cartoons follows the wife, Patsy, as she is expecting her first baby & goes to antenatal classes, takes her vitamin tablets etc! :)
These books are great fun - recipe books and a social history all in one! :)
They are called "Patsy's Reflections" and "Patsy's Christmas Reflections" and were published by the Daily Mirror.
  • Hello there. I remember the Patsy's cookery book from my childhood. It was kept in the kitchen drawer and was a spiral bound book. I was always reading it. Some years ago, I was horrified to find that my mother had thrown it away. She now feels guilty and is looking for it in charity shops...not much chance I fear. I have been trying on the internet for years and your posting is the first thing I've come accross so I don't suppose you fancy selling one of the books? :T
