Been charged for receiving texts?!

Help needed! I'm on a contract and never use more than my allowance of calls or minutes, so I was shocked when I just looked at my bank account and saw twice as much as expected taken by my network. I've checked my online account with my network and it looks like I've been charged £1.25 a go for receiving loads of texts. The only texts I ever get are from friends or family in the UK, that shouldn't cost me anything should it? I'm going to phone my network as soon as I can but in the meantime does anyone know if I will be able to get my money back? I will check my contract, but I'm sure it's not normal to charge people to read a text! They've certainly never charged me before!

It's quite likely that you've received some premium texts, which are often chargeable. You'll need to find out the shortcode from your network, and stick it into PhonepayPlus to find out who it is, and who to complain too.
  • Do you mean like one of those stupid adverts where you text off and end up receiving loads of crap that they charge you for? Because I've never had anything like that. Literally just texts off friends and family. This is why I'm so shocked I've been charged to receive them, if I text my friend now it won't cost them anything to read it so why am I paying to read my friends' texts?!

You don't request delivery receipt set by any chance?

  • I've gone back and checked the times and dates on them all, they seem to come through in groups, at least two at the same time, once a week, but I have never given my number out and never received any texts other than from real people that I know so no idea what's causing this.

I'm really panicking now because I've just looked at the stuff I'll be charged on my next bill and there's already 12 of these texts in there, they're coming in groups of 6 now. If this keeps up I won't be able to afford my bill. Really hoping my network can sort this out when I phone them later :(

Yes, sorry for the confusion, I added the "in the UK" to my post meaning that they're not abroad so it shouldn't be anything to do with that (I remember back in the dark ages once being charged to read a text from a friend who'd gone on holiday, don't know if that still happens!).
