I personally use AVG Free and have done for many years.

Assuming you use Windows, Microsofts own Security Essentials is generally regarded as one of the best at the moment.0

Hi all, i downloaded avg anti-virus earlier and set-up runs all the way till last seconds of installation, the bar is nearly at the very end of install, then i get an error code that reads, general internal error, msi engine failed to install + couple of error codes. Any help much appreciated on this, thanks.0

A lot of people on this forum use Avast Free I've used it for 18 months and not had a problem (touch wood!)0

Avast is good, so is Avira both are preferred over AVG;)
As been pointed out you may have MSE already on your computer, which is good.
With regards to your error, you may have downloaded the wrong version for your system. Your system might be 32bit and you downloaded the 64bit version of AVG or vice versa, which may cause installation errors:)
Also advisable to have http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/0 -
Dear 3431Anna,
Personally I would use AVG Free as one of the posters here has advised. As far as a firewall goes, if you are sitting behind a router for your internet connection, then you have a hardware firewall built into it, which is going to be much better than anything in software you will find.
I have a number of systems running here with just Virus and Malware Protection, with no ills for ten years........
Just my two pence worth.

im using AVG anti virus free adition 2012. i have been using them for 6 years, always keeps my pc safe, update if installin a virus found so u can cancell the down load. also auto weekly checks (mine is doin this right now)
i would highly recommend AVG0 -
of the free a/v progs, order of preference:-
1. avira (if you're more techie-minded and don't need a separate e-mail scanner, best detection rates and heuristics-but up the settings of the behaviour scanner, second-lightest on system resources )
2. avast (includes an e-mail scanner and sandbox, good detection rates, lightest on system resources)
3. microsoft security essentials (heavy on system resources compared to the above, detections not as good)
4. whatever else (includes avg)......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Avast free and occasional scan with malwarebytes. As surely as night follows day capitalism will come crumbling down. On a mission to secure a just and ethical society.0
