    I meant emails..

Probably a bit late now, but if you just needed to collect/send emails and have a modem (maybe built in to the motherboard?), you could set that up to use a dial-up connection over your landline. Maybe worth doing that now in case your broadband connection ever goes down again!

The problem is that you have a contract guaranteeing your continued subscription to the service for a minimum period, in exchange for a reasonable provision of service.

If you're telling Talk Talk that you are going to breach your agreement, then they have no reason to meet their side of the terms either.

It's not blackmail -- it's adhering to the terms of the contract. What terms did you agree regarding the provision of service? Did you agree any terms that allow you to cancel if the service is unavailable for a certain time?

If Talk Talk will actually let you cancel without penalty, presumably your new provider would be responsible for fixing any technical issues that prevent you from getting the contracted service. Maybe that would be an option...?

I have to say, I've heard so many bad things about Talk Talk, and their prices are so unbelievably low, that I'm not surprised at their alleged incompetence at dealing with this issue (not that it should make any difference, of course, both parties are entitled to having their contractual terms met).
I am having lot of problem with Talk Talk too. I have signed up direct debit and they claimed that I haven't, problem in registering to view my bill because I am disputing the charges not as agreed and advertised.....and many problems. I don't know what to do as they pile a £4 approx on each month because I refused to pay them. Any advice on this please? Thanks.

I'm currently paying £50 a month to BT for Option 3 Unlimited Broadband (£26.50) , line rental (£14.60) and free evenings and weekends calls, now out of the 18 months contract. We make few chargeable calls yet BT says this is the right amount to be paying, however I think this is an excessive amount to pay every month when there appear to be very good deals out there. I have to say we have never had any trouble with our service in the 18 months we have been with BT Broadband which we took out when we moved house (we were not with BT before that for our Broadband)

I'm an Orange PAYG mobile user so I could get a good deal from them ie 12 month contract for Unlimted Broadband (£10 per month). line rental (£13.50 per month) and free evening and weekend calls or upgrade to free anytime calls for £15 a month plus line rental. So either £23.50 or £28.50)

I contacted BT to get my MAC code which they say is valid for 21 days just in case I decide to switch to Orange and would have to hand immediately. I phoned the first time and of course was given all the spiel about staying with BT and a 'special deal not generally available' and also the suggestion of downgrading to Option 2 Broadband as our useage would come within that bracket. However still not as cheap as Orange. Didnt get the MAC code though!

So the following day I phoned again to ask for the MAC code which I was freely given and again asked why I wanted to change and they proceeded to tell me why I shouldnt go with Orange for many reasons, asked me what I was planning to get from Orange and came back with:

Staying on Option 3, line rental and free anytime calls for a total of £32 with a 12 month contract which can be reviewed from the 9th month into the contract.

I'm now wondering whether its better to stick with the devil you know as I have no complaints (although I know plenty have) having managed to reduce the payments by an acceptable amount AND get an additional service or do I take a risk and change to cheaper Orange not really knowing how it will work out. I have read some shocking reviews of Orange but on the other hand some very good ones too, the same with BT.
