CK’s school run moan!

if you and your neighbour share the school run why not seek out a taxi firm who has a people carrier and share the weekly cost? that way it should cut your carbon footprint, save you a bit of cash in poor fuel consuption and wear and tear.0

not sure it is 12 miles in one hour, that's just the average mph so it's a bit of a misleading figure (it probably is about 12 miles but it shouldn't be taken as red is all)
5t.
The engine was switched on as I left home and switched off in Walden.
Average speed: 41mph as I hit the bottom of the road 💙💛 💔0 -
Having grown up in the OP's town, I have no sympathy. There are plenty of perfectly good schools of all sorts much nearer, so it was her own choice.
From memory, she could have sent her children to-
Herts and Essex (girls' school) was one of the top state schools in the country back a decade ago - I doubt it's become a sink school since.
Or The Bishop's Stortford High School (boys' school) - also good, particularly the 6th form iirc.
Then there was Hockerill Anglo-European, the international school.
St. Mary's (the Catholic school)
Birchwood and Leventhorpe (that's Sawbridgeworth, but that's only about 5 miles) for ordinary state schools
And there was a private school too.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY0 -

We live on Grange Road, which as you will know has H&E at the top.
This is actually 1st choice for our eldest, who starts secondary in September💙💛 💔0 -

Ah, I assumed that with a commute like that, it was for secondary school.
Anyway, I know Grange Road well because I went to H&E until 16. I was always very happy there.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j

They’re at the friends at the moment, however I’m hoping that when DD2 hits 11, I won’t be doing that one again.

The OP's other posts suggest they aren't on the breadline0 -
When I went to school, lessons started at 8:40am. However, the school gates opened at 8am, so although it was a big school (1200 kids) it was never too busy in the mornings as everyone did not have to turn up at once. Also just about everyone walked or cycled - the kids that were driven in were viewed as "odd".
These days, my daughters school starts at 9:20am. However they do not want any children on the premises before 9:15am. Therefore there is a 5 minute "window" for 270 children to arrive at the school, which is total manic especially as at least half are driven in.
If they opened the gates for 30 minutes rather than 5, then that would at least spread it out a bit, but the teachers won't hear of it.0 -

I see what you’re saying, but we have things as we like them here.
What, making a journey like that at 12mph because of excess traffic?
Absolutely insane.
Live about 3/4 of a mile from school, but take the kids climbing on Fridays, it's 6 miles, do it in about 25 minutes.
You are the cause of your problems. Make better choices. On the policy we have, it’s only around £200/year more expensive to insure the other 2 as well!
Plus VED, servicing, MOT, financing, depreciation, etc.0 -

At my children's school the school day largely revolves around maximising car throughput. Start and finish times are staggered in order to allow as many parents as possible to drive to school.
Well, not in theory, but in practice. Only limited on-street parking and if everyone went home at once, it would be chaos.
Still doesn't stop stupidity, picked my daughter up yesterday, cycled out the gate, there was a bloody great Chelsea tractor outside blocking it, engine running. I thought 'what is that stupid cow doing there?' Turns out she was waiting for one the cars parked closest to the school to leave so she could have the space, rather than having to walk 100 yards or so.
Bloody idiots.0
