1 hour at an average speed of 12mph means the school is 12 miles from home?

Unless you live in the Scottish Highlands, there must be one closer... Is there no school bus to the school?

Town driving is awful for MPG. We have a diesel Mondeo that usually gets used on fast runs out of town. I had to drive it across town for its service yesterday. It was probably about an 8 mile round trip through a town centre. By the end of the day, the recent MPG reading was down from 42.0 to 41.0 MPG.

I'm in the middle of england. In a village 14 miles from the nearest town. 14 miles from school, Tesco's, the petrol station.....
You're an 8 miile round trip to a garage, and you're in a town to start with.

It costs us £400 a year for a bus pass to get ours in for sixth form.
(In the end, she drove her own car in when she passed her test, petrol worked out to be a similar cost, so she was one of the 33% as well)

The bus would have been substantially cheaper, given that the total cost of motoring is far higher than the petrol cost alone...

Sounds like good environmental justification for shutting down schools then. ;)

    Not really.

Tax, mot and insurance she paid for the year anyway, so that's effectively free as it would be sitting on the drive still costing the same if she went by bus. Less than 5000 miles wouldn't be much wear and tear.
So really all it cost extra was petrol, and she got over 50 to the gallon.

Like all kids, she had afterschool activities once or twice a week, so I would have to drive there and back to collect her, costing me petrol.
Part of the deal in me paying her petrol was she waited and brought here sisters home (same town) if they had afterschool, and couldn't get the bus.
So we saved a fourtune in my petrol costs.
  • Here is a thought for you why not put your children in a school near to you, just thinking some thinking out of the box.

Ah yes the school run it would be so much quicker if there wasn't all those inconsiderate people also dropping their children off at school at the same time!

I much prefer driving in the mornings when it's school holidays but for some reason the boys complain if I only take them to school then.

As a frequent school runner I would hesitate to cast the first stone at anybody taking their offspring to school what makes me want to give people a good slap with a wet kipper is those who live less than a ten minute walk away from the school and still use the car! Ok if you have to drop them off and go to work or some where else but if it's only for the school run walk!

*I feel much better for that*

1 hour and 6 minutes to school but only 20 minutes back, cant you find a different route? sometimes even going out of your way will cut your journey time.

ummm might that be because there are lots of people going towards the school but a lot fewer going away in that direction?

My kids are happy where they are. OH used to teach, and that was the school she used to teach at. I wouldn’t be privately educating my kids if it wasn’t free.

It’s going through Newport at 8.20-ish that makes it much longer. There’s one of the areas most populous grammar schools in the region and it’s stupidly located! Although to be fair, they didn’t think of that in 1588!
