Both a vent and a warning.

Just had BT bill, fault at pole was fixed in december.Have been charged £130 call out charge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spoken to BT, the engineers do not work for them, they work for Openreach.BT do not know who the engineer is that fixed the fault, they can only go by what he has written in the notes and he has put the charge down to my number!!!!!

I have to give BT 'evidence' to prove it is not my charge!!!! I should have got the engineers name etc etc etc. According to the engineer I had the phone plugged in the wrong socket in the hall and only the phone in the lounge was working, only I do not have a phone in the lounge, and the engineer told me the fault was up the pole outside.Still not enough for BT got to go to Openreach to say what they have to say.

I am so mad. In future no repair person steps through my door without telling me exactly who he works for and his name.

I now have to wait for BT to write to Openreach disputing the charge, will take up to 15 days.

Surely if you have a charge for something like this you should have to sign for it?

There is no way I am going to pay this.

I am so cross.

What on earth has happened to BT!!!!!!

  • We had an external fault last year where the engineer asked to come inside the house and check everything there too. When I asked why, as they had already confirmed the fault was outside (as the wire was dangling from the pole it was pretty clear) he said they were told to look for anything inside which may be getting worn or close to needing replaced and if so to fix it. Then it immediately became the customers "fault" as it was inside and they were billed, regardless of the fact that the original fault was outside and therefore BT's fault.

They are one of the worst companies I have the misfortune to deal with on an all too often basis.

ask for a copy of the report and put it in dispute so you don't have to pay yet

Quick to take your money and quick to solve your dispute.

And who in this day and age ask a BT man his name and number when they have been booked to come to your house.

They should be the ones playing detective instead of blaming you.

Yes. I have said I am not going to pay it. BT have told me to deduct
it from the bill and pay the rest until it is sorted out and to ignore the letters demanding payment!!!!

I did not even know that the engineers did not work for BT. I am pretty sure the van they came in had BT on the side.

What do we have to do these days, get the engineer to sign a statement saying there are no charges?

We had to go out and left the engineers up the pole.

I am so cross I am having to sort this out. My contract is with BT not Openreach. I did not ask Openreach to fix the fault I asked BT.
I expected BT to simply be able to refer back to the engineer to confirm that the fault was up the pole and that the wrong details had been put on my account. But no, I am at first made to feel like
I am somehow trying to get out of paying the charge. I think they only started to take notice of me when I said I did not have a line in the lounge and the engineers notes mention a line in the lounge.

So beware if you report a fault to BT, you may be charged and have to prove it to them that you are not liable for the charge.

That is something I have learned tonight. The engineers are not BT they are 'Openreach' and nothing to do with BT!.

    Thanks.

How does that work then? BT made it sound like they are nothing to do with them. Why do they have to write to Openreach and for it to take up to 15 days if they are a part of them?

They actually said to me they are not BT engineers, they are Openreach.

They're probably just run as seperate (legal) entities. In the same way One Stop is owned by Tesco by run independantly, different staff/management, etc
