Restoring texts on an iPhone from an iTunes backup?

So my sister sends off her iPhone to be repaired. She backed it up via iTunes, restored it (as the original statement from seller was a replacement) & then returned it.

Phone has apparently been repaired (we'll see), and if at all possible, she'd like to get all her texts back on there, as well as settings & all the rest.

Is it automatically done, or do you have to go a special route to get texts and/or settings restored?

On the topic of settings....

I have whatsapp installed, as does my gf & my sister too.

Assuming whatsapp is "closed down", if i get a text to it, i get an alert on the screen telling me a text has come through & who from. Same for my gf.

My sister doesn't.

I've looked into her settings & they appear the same as mine.

We're all running 3GS & iOS5.0.1

Is this where push notifications come into play? As i don't know what her settings are.

If she restores from the backup, all settings and texts should be restored. I've done this many times. Other content (apps, photos, music and other media) are not included in the backup but iTunes usually restores this from the PC when restoring from a backup.

    Sweet.

Having never done this i assume once plugged in to the PC, it'll ask if you want to restore from backup?

As for the photos & such, i predicted that, which is why she backed up all her photos anyway, ready to put them back on the iPhone.

Yes when you plug the phone first time, iTunes will ask you if you want to restore from backup, click yes and then wait until done. Since you have iOS 5 you can also set up the iCloud so all text message, phone numbers are saved on it. If you loss your phone you can login from your compute to read.

    Thanks. That'll do nicely.

Any view on the whatsapp issue? It's strange that my gf & I get instant alerts, yet my sister gets nothing. She has to physically open whatsapp to see if she has any texts.

Go into settings, notifications and make sure whatsapp is in the "in notification centre" if it is click on whatsapp from that list and check the alert style is not on none, if it is move it to alerts, and also check all three options are set to on,

    should look something like this:

I checked her settings for the above ... and they're the exact same as mine (and the same as above).

    I don't get it
