Virgin media hub, should I have one installed?

I have motorolla surfboard sb4100 and linksys router with vm 10mb cable broadband and very slow download speeds for years. Now vm have said they will instal a hub for free with no extra monthly cost. I didnt expect a hub I just thought they might send a modem upgrade but thought as it was being offered free I should probably take it.
I am now wondering if I should just ask for a basic modem instead as Im not sure if the hub controls what firewall and virus protection is used taking away personal choice.
Is the vm hub ok or should I just ask for modem upgrade?

My sister has the hub, just went round and installed her pc n stuff after her moving house, haven't had a play with it as yet. Would be interested to hear other views on it too. Her speeds seem ok, but all she's doing is browsing the internet4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

I've had no problems with my hub and it seems to work very well. Occasionally (once or twice a month) it drops the broadband connection but switching it off for a minute or two seems to solve the problem. The initial installation was also very easy.0

This will presumably tie you in to a new 12m contract? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

They are sending an engineer round to instal mine even though I offered to instal it myself.
I didnt think to ask about tieing me into another contract but to be honest if my package stays the same price I will most likely stay with them anyway as I don't have a bt line and a cheaper than most deal, its around £34 a month for 2 telephone lines 24/7 unlimited, basic tv and 10mb broadband but I know it will be going up a bit soon as I had a letter about the yearly increase for allThanx

I think they are going to be rolling out the hubs along with the "double speed" increases as some of the old modems can't handle the new speeds. I've still got my old moden and router here. Works fine for now, so will stick to it until it needs changing4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

Apparently you can use the SuperHub in modem only mode and keep using your Linksys as the router if you want .. best to ask the engineer about that I suppose!0

I got a new Superhub last Wednesday, after having the same Scientfic Atlanta modem for over nine years.
I set it up myself and have been really impressed with it - no problems whatsoever so far, whereas my expensive Belkin router regularly dropped the connection. I'm running two iPads, three iPhones, two laptops and a desktop off it and all of their speeds seem fine.0 -
..and don't be drawn in to installing any carp on your machines, including any dodgy VM "security" software. You never need to install any sw for a router on your pc ...........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
I have one of the Superhubs and it works fine for me.
The old modem was rubbish in comparison and am now getting much higher speeds more consistently.0 -
Apparently the hub is a bit rubbish - see if you can get a super hub instead.0
